USCA Road America: Racing for the Whole Family

Wisconsin in the fall with 100 of the nation's hottest car builds is about as picturesque as it gets—and Optima's Search for the Ultimate Street Car, USCA Series, brought this stunning scenery to the historic Road America track.

Optima's USCA is a grassroots, amateur racing series that provides a safe and educational environment to push your build to the limit. Everybody is welcome to participate, regardless of age or skill level. The same is true for the types of vehicles, you name it and it has probably been entered.

As a participant for a few years now, with my own '09 Nissan 370Z Sport, what always blows me away is that series founder, Jimi Day, along with Jim McIlvaine and the rest of the organization, go out of their way to personally welcome each participant and ensure they're enjoying themselves.

This Road America event was the final one of the regular season, before the OUSCI Invitational at SEMA. Road America, USCA's crown jewel, is also Optima Battery's home track—this year, for the first time in the series' history, USCA would be running all 4 miles of the fastest road course in North America. For those unfamiliar with the Road America track, imagine 4 miles of dramatic elevation changes, 14 unique corners, 3 triple-digit straights, all nestled in the hills of the Kettle Moraine forest area of Wisconsin. For 62 years, legends such as Andretti, Villeneuve, Fittapaldi and Penske have battled here.

Make no mistake, as serene as the track is, it is equally daunting. Series organizer Jimi Day summed it up this way: "You had better be nervous about this track. You need to be mentally prepared for the speeds you will be doing. The track is by far the fastest and most demanding on the schedule and demands your full attention." There was a bit of chuckling at that, but it soon died when Jimi emphasized the demands of the track. "Three straights where you will be flat out, putting many cars on their speed limiters, demanding braking zones that destroy street pads in 2-3 laps, and the famous carousel—a 190-degree corner that can starve a motor of its oil supply."

2017 saw an eclectic mix of entrants, if a bit heavy on the Corvette side. Though the series has grown, with a lot more sponsors and businesses involved, it is still a participant-focused affair. After talking to a few participants a common theme appeared, it seems most are in it for the fun of competing and simple bragging rights.

Gallagher's '16 Ford Focus RS

Mike Gallagher, an industrial designer from Ohio, has been entering USCA for a few years in his Cadillac. This year, as his Cadillac was experiencing electrical gremlins, he upgraded his '16 Focus RS with goodies from KW Suspension, Steeda, Mountune and ETS to go racing. He also designed a very detailed wrap job... all of which was done in his garage. Touring the series with his wife, Mike enjoys competing in USCA because it allows him to showcase his design skills while honing his race craft. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere keep the Gallaghers coming back year after year.

Lichtenberg's 900 hp '91 GMC Cyclone

A similar perspective came from Ray Lichtenberg of Minneapolis. He brought what started out as a rare '91 GMC Cyclone, an AWD platform. The engine has been dropped in favor of a built LSX swap featuring a Magnusson supercharger. The tire-melting 900 hp is fed through the custom paddle shift system to the AWD setup. Its body and interior are subtle, with stock panels and interior trim—what is remarkable is most of this build was completed in a trailer while touring the Hotrod Power Tour. What brings Ray and this one-of-a-kind Cyclone to the Optima series is that it is one of the few events that feature Street/Show builds without the restrictions found in other series. He also enjoys the challenge of the five different events that take place in each Optima weekend. However, enough cannot be said about being able to tour some of the country's most iconic tracks.

Thomas' '16 Corvette Z06

On the opposite side of the spectrum lies David and Karen Thomas from South Carolina. They've been volunteering at Optima events for a few years, as well as organizing the Saturday evening dinner. After totaling their previous Corvette in a highway incident, they built a 2016 Corvette Z06.

It's rare that their car is trailered, as over the course of two weeks they've clocked 6,000 miles! This year, they were the only entrants to compete in all 7 Optima events. David and Karen stay involved with the USCA to network for their sponsors and promote their business, all while enjoying the community feel that USCA creates.

Kepler's Family Race Affair

Nothing says "family event" like seeing the Kepler family on track. For a decade, Mike Kepler has been involved with Optima and is a common face at these events. His brother, Steve, also works for Optima Batteries and has been tracking his Datsun-themed GTR for years. It was convenient that all three of them competed in the GTS class: Mike with his 2000 Corvette, Logan in Steve's Focus RS, while Steve brought his subtle yet potent 2013 GTR.

The GTR's Datsun scheme is cool enough, but it has special significance to the Kepler family. Steve and Mike's father ran a #26 Corvette against Datsun's during the '60s and '70s in SCCA, so the graphics are in honor of him. Each one of them are skilled behind the wheel, it was great to see the coaching (and the ribbing) going on between the three of them. At the end of the day, after all of the competition and track activities, they were there simply to have fun.

Most of the competitors would agree that the biggest appeal for the Optima series is that it truly is for anyone and everyone. Few other series offer the opportunity to experience the country's most iconic and revered race tracks in a setting that promotes education and fun. Yes, there are some heavy hitters competing in USCA, but they are also a wealth of information. Plus, registration in an event is usually cheaper than a track day entry fee. So what are you waiting for?

Sneak previews the week of the aftermarket's biggest gathering can (and will) no doubt be found with ease on social media. You will inevitably see this in your feeds today and in event coverage in the days following. But the wraps are quickly coming off on this. Acura wants it to be known that it has something very special waiting for you at the Las Vegas Convention Center, in what we are now preparing our minds, souls, feet and livers for at this very moment: the 2017 SEMA Show.

Built in collaboration with the master mechanics at ScienceOfSpeed, the "Dream Project" NSX is a big one. It checks off all the boxes on things we like to see from a SEMA build: upgrades to power, a tuned suspension and smooth body enhancements that remind us why SoS is so damn good at what they do.

ScienceOfSpeed Acura NSX at 2017 SEMA Show

In the engine bay, custom downpipes and a stainless exhaust system give the NSX a more aggressive sound, and a liquid injected intercooler help give the twin-turbo system the ability to pump out 610 hp and 507 lb-ft of torque, a considerable boost over stock figures.

ScienceOfSpeed Acura NSX at 2017 SEMA Show

A custom suspension allows for a subtle drop, but SoS also uses automatic iLIFT sensors to help lift the front axle approximately two inches should the car be too low in challenging circumstances. The stock wheels have been replaced with a set of forged 20x9"/21x12" ADVAN GT wheels, a striking contrast to the gold flake finished Brembo carbon ceramic brakes.

But it's the aero that's going to have you and your friends talking all week. Designed by SoS, the GT3-inspired kit is aggressive, crafted with carbon fiber and has a rear wing and diffuser combo that works with most of the original Honda design to help improve downforce. As a nod to its older brother, the ScienceOfSpeed Acura NSX sports a black roof and blends into a Nouvelle Blue Pearl hue as it works further down the body. Inside, the black and blue carries throughout with custom skinned Recaro Pole Position seats, door panels and dashboard. To top everything off, a multi-function guageART OLED display unit provides a state-of-the-art look at vehicle data.

Seeing Red: A Timeless Truck for Toyota Fanboys

It wasn’t until recently that I realized how much of an effect growing up in the '90s had on my taste in vehicles. As a kid, “Ironman” Ivan Stewart was at the top of my list of racing idols. The allure of this one man and his trusty Toyota dominating the competition year after year was something that stuck with me through my teenage years, and eventually led me to buy my first 4-wheel-drive Toyota truck in 2012.

After years of “build, play, break, repeat” every weekend, in the various off-road destinations of California, I was ready for something different. In 2015, I sold my late model Tacoma, complete with all the off-road fixins’, and began my pursuit of the perfect '90s desert truck with modern guts. After a year of searching, I came across a rig that was almost too good to be true.

Finding the Perfect 1991 4WD Toyota Pickup

Scarlett's front end

After responding to the Race-Dezert Classified ad and finding out the truck was just a quarter mile away from my office, I didn’t waste any time getting down there to take a look. The first time I laid eyes on this truck, I knew it was the one I had been looking for. Beginning its life as a '91 4-wheel-drive Toyota Pickup, belonging to an elderly woman for many years, this truck then landed in the hands of Mike Sheehan, a fabricator at Richer Racing in Oceanside, California. When I headed down to meet Mike and see the truck, I noticed many of the more difficult parts of the build were already finished. Just one look and you could tell it was a truck that paid homage to the '80s and '90s desert race trucks, with a touch of modern luxury making it the perfect weekend warrior. Needless to say, I couldn’t let somebody else have it, so we made a deal and I drove off with the truck that is today known simply as “Scarlett”.

Scarlett interior

When I got the keys to Scarlett, she already had many upgrades I would want in a desert truck. The interior is tastefully caged, with 2-inch 4130 chromoly steel, gusseted and plated to the cab with the factory moonroof in mind. A pair of PRP suspension seats and Beard five-point harnesses keep you firmly in your seat. Behind the seats is plenty of storage for tool boxes, extra parts, a soft-cooler and a few other things I take on longer trips. Being HAM licensed, I was pleased to find a Kenwood HAM radio already installed and wired to a PCI Race Radios 4-link intercom, ready for both driver and passenger headsets. My favorite part about the interior of this truck is the fact that all the original equipment is still 100% functional. An aftermarket radio and subwoofer make listening to music great, the air conditioning and heater work flawlessly—something you don’t often find in purpose-built trucks like this.

Scarlett interior

Improving Upon the Original Toyota Equipment

Scarlett was sporting a Total Chaos Fabrication Gen 1 Caddy long travel system, the weapon of choice for '90s Toyota desert trucks. Although effective and stout, the old torsion bar design is dated by the advancements in today’s off-road suspension technology.

Wanting to keep the suspension in line with the guys who were building these trucks for desert racing since the beginning, I called up Total Chaos Fabrication to see what they had to modernize the front end of this truck with. A few weeks later, I installed their latest 4-wheel-drive long travel system, complete with boxed lower arms for added strength, a heimed steering upgrade and the beefiest idler arm on the market I could find for this truck. After ditching the torsion bars and smooth-body shocks, I installed a pair of King 2.5 inch coilover shocks up front. The adjustability and ease of maintenance that coilovers offer were too good to pass up. The next upgrade on the front-end will be King 2.5-inch bypass shocks, in addition to the coilovers, to help with extra dampening and shock tuning.

Total Chaos Fabrication boxed lower long travel kit

These days, unless you’re rolling with a full blown 4-link rear suspension with trailing arms, coilovers and bypass shocks, you’re behind the curve. But in the '90s, leaf springs were commonplace—even for race trucks, and the guys building them would make them work flawlessly in the harshest terrain. Currently, the rear suspension features a Deaver Spring F67 leaf-under-axle setup, and Bilstein 4-tube bypass shocks with piggyback reservoirs. I haven’t changed anything on the rear end yet, but I’ll soon be swapping the stock 8-inch Toyota rear axle housing for a bigger, stronger version from a first-generation Tundra, in addition to freshening up the existing suspension kit with new bypass shocks.

Action Where It Counts

Scarlett rear suspension

As far as physical attributes go, I think the biggest eye-catcher is Scarlett's 35-inch tires. Not large by truck standards, the size seems large on such a small truck. Thanks to the Hanneman Fiberglass front fenders and rear bedsides, the tires fit nice and snug under the truck—which isn’t exactly tall to begin with.

I’ve always liked the look of a low truck with big tires—something about maximum traction while keeping the center of gravity low and stable has always been a preference of mine in the dirt. I swapped the 17-year-old tires it came with (no, that’s not a typo) with a brand new set of 35x12.50R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers wrapped around KMC Machete beadlock wheels. I really cannot say enough about this setup.

The Ridge Grapplers continue to impress me with their nimble, but predictable off-road characteristics, even at full street pressure. On the highway, they are the quietest and smoothest off-road tire I’ve ever had on any truck. But best of all, even after several torture tests in multiple kinds of terrain, they’re holding their shape very well, without any chunking or tearing like I’ve experienced with other light truck tires. The KMC Machete wheels are a real crowd pleaser, and allow me to air down to get maximum traction for 4-wheel-drive days in the rocks.

Scarlett side profile on 35 inch Ridge Grapplers

Speaking of airing down, one of my least favorite parts about off-roading used to be airing back up to hit the paved road home. Frantically looking for a gas station with a working air compressor, or waiting around to borrow a buddy’s portable compressor after he’s finished with it was never ideal and a huge waste of time. But all of that is a thing of the past, now that Powertank hooked me up with one of their 10lbs CO2 tank systems in Candy Red. This system, complete with a Power Flow II pressure regulator, aluminum mount and roll cage clamps, is the perfect solution for having fast, on-board air wherever I go. The Powertank can fill all 4 of my 35-inch Ridge Grapplers from 12psi to 35psi in under 4 minutes. In addition to the time it saves, it’s also useful for running impact tools where my shop compressor can’t reach.

Truly an innovative product, I recommend Powertank for anyone who’s serious about off-roading in desolate areas. Stay tuned for a side-by-side video comparison of the Powertank vs the leading portable air compressors on the market, right here on Driving Line.

Still Needing More

Despite all the useful upgrades, Scarlett still isn’t perfect. Knowledge of Toyota truck history can help illustrate my plans to get Scarlett as close to perfect in my eyes....

In the late '80s, Toyota developed a line of V6 engines to offer more performance in the Pickup and 4Runner. While a new engine from the leader in reliable trucks seemed promising, the 3.0L SOHC (single overhead cam) V6 known as the 3VZ-E quickly became Toyota’s problem child. In addition to being just as slow as the trusty 22RE 4-cylinder, the 3VZ-E was a gas-guzzler no matter how conservatively you drove. Perhaps its biggest pitfall, was the 3VZ-E's propensity to blowing head gaskets under 100,000 miles. In fact, Toyota rolled out a recall campaign to address the persistent issue after years of constant warranty work to make them right, a campaign they are still running to this day. Even after the recall was performed, many have reported the same issue occurring again.

For this reason, the most popular “fix” to the 3.0L’s poor dependability, lack of power and fuel inefficiency is to simply yank the engine out and replace it with the next generation Toyota truck’s more powerful and reliable DOHC (double overhead cam) V6, named the 5VZ-FE.

Scarlett Racing

This is what’s next for Scarlett. I have most of the parts ready to go to perform the swap, however, she hasn’t let me down yet—even with over 230,000 original miles. The time will come soon enough to retire this old motor and set my sights on performance.

The swap itself is so easy—it’s almost as if Toyota planned it this way. The 5VZ-FE Tacoma engine bolts up directly to the stock motor mounts, bellhousing, radiator and many other components of the older trucks. In fact, the only components needing modification are the wiring harness, exhaust, oil pan and hood.

It doesn't take much to double the 150 hp of the currecnt engine. Adding a Magnuson supercharger with a URD 7th injector kit can put this motor into the 300 hp range, alongside proper tuning and supporting mods. Along with that, the R150 5-speed manual transmission could use a refresh, with a performance clutch as well.

All in due time...

Scarlett Toyota Pickup

Building What's Worth It

At the end of the day, I bought this truck for its formidable off-road capabilities, added safety measures and to finally chase down my dream of owning a piece of functioning '90s truck memorabilia. Slowly building it up to its full potential, I'm giving her the time and attention she deserves.

What makes it all worth it is the looks I get when I roll into a truck meet. Standing apart from aisle-after-aisle of Raptors, Tacomas and 4Runners, a well-built, late-model rig is surprisingly refreshing—and that’s the lasting impression I want to leave on people with this project. It's all about keeping the aesthetics of a classic Toyota, while having the chops to outperform a showroom model in the desert.

I’m confident that in the coming years, Scarlett will become the benchmark for classic Toyota desert trucks, bringing the nostalgic style of yesterday to the off-road technology of tomorrow.

Fair Lady: Gas Monkey Garage X Big Mike Datsun Z

Those familiar with Gas Monkey Garage’s Fast N’ Loud show may be surprised to see this car come through its doors. It’s true; GMG has never built a Japanese car. But if Richard’s tagline of “Get you some of that!” is any indication, these guys are open to just about anything—and in this case it’s a 1975 Datsun 280Z.

Gas Monkey Garage Datsun 280Z with Big Mike

Switching things up in the garage, the Gas Monkeys recruited Big Mike to help as guest builder. Having deep roots with imports, Big Mike’s personal builds have graced the covers of magazines and gained widespread acclaim from the tuner scene. Last year’s SEMA show saw the unveiling of his ’92 Honda Prelude and its Top 10 placement in SEMA’s prestigious Battle of the Builders competition. For the 2017 SEMA show he’s got a new project taking shape.

Once asked by Richard to join in on this build, the two quickly agreed on the classic Z car platform. “Even if you can’t put your finger on it, I felt the hot rod demographic would be able to relate to the Z. And Richard agreed,” recounts Big Mike. Already in the proper era to be considered a “classic,” the Z car is at once decidedly Japanese and American. The size, nimbleness and power plant all say JDM—while the lines and styling have been geared toward the U.S.of A from the start. Big Mike’s vision for the Datsun was to maintain its classic simplicity while complementing its power, saying, “The smaller flares, the color, every decision made was to keep this car in that era.”

Gas Monkey Garage Datsun 280Z with Big Mike

They kicked things off with an incredibly clean stock ’75 280Z. A solid base vehicle always helps when it comes to squeezing work into GMG’s strenuous TV timeline. From there, the body was reworked in places, taking skills more often associated with a kustom. Blacking out trim was the easy part. All side lighting was deleted, along with the rear bumper, giving the car simpler lines and streamlining the back significantly. “We made it look like it could have come from the factory like that, but it was a lot of work,” notes Mike. “I didn’t want to redesign the car and change it, I wanted to complement it.” Rear fenders had to be re-worked to accommodate a wider tire, all the while “We tried to keep it as close to a stock bodyline as it could be,” says lead GMG builder, Charles Cimino.

Gas Monkey Garage Datsun 280Z with Big Mike

Sitting underneath those fenders is where things begin to get exciting. “The closer you look at it the more you see and are impressed,” explains Big Mike. “It’s classy on the outside, but its technologically advanced and the powerful performance makes it truly stand apart.” If the sticky Nitto NT01 tires are any indication, this car was meant for much more than just sitting under a spotlight. Handling is taken care of by top-of-the-line suspension components from Arizona Z Car, featuring billet everything with coilovers and custom springs. Charles notes, “It’s got a fully adjustable suspension front and back. Every pick-up point, where the suspension is attached to the body, is adjustable – so if you decide to tune it or race it, it’s all adjustable. That’ll give you that more aggressive track handling and then you can adjust it back for street driving.”

Gas Monkey Garage Datsun 280Z with Big Mike: Z Car Suspension

Powering this lady is not it’s original 6-cylinder, but something smaller. Seeking to get the best weight balance, the chosen 4-cylinder powerplant is lighter and allows placement closer to the car’s centerline. Even though it’s smaller, this JDM-spec S14 Nissan Silvia SR20 engine allows for big gains in horsepower. “Everything about this car was designed to make it perform on the street versus in a drag manner,” says Mike. “The SR20 gives us a simple, usable, powerful powerband versus a huge turbo and huge cams.”

Gas Monkey Garage Datsun 280Z with Big Mike: SR20 engine

The engine and its placement gives the Datsun a 48/52 weight balance, not to mention about 300 more horses than the car had stock. “Conservatively, if we meet 400 hp we’ll be happy,” notes Charles. “Considering the horsepower-to-weight ratio of this car, it puts it in a competitive seat.” The boost comes from a Garrett GT3071 turbo with Turbosmart wastegates and blowoff valve joined to Hypertune manifolds, throttle body and fuel rail. No stone’s been left unturned or detail overlooked in this engine bay—while the exterior is kept simple and classy, under the hood is where Big Mike really likes to wow.

Gas Monkey Garage Datsun 280Z with Big Mike

While some of Gas Monkey’s fans may be more used to seeing patched-together imports noisy-up their local streets, this Z project makes a statement that high caliber builds and attention to detail exist on both sides of the fence. Likewise, Big Mike is eager to introduce his crew to a larger world. “People tend to categorize me as a Prelude guy, or a Honda guy, because that’s what they’ve seen. The opportunity to be on a show with this famous hot rod shop, and we’re not working on a Honda, it’s going to blow some people’s minds!”

Gas Monkey Garage Datsun 280Z with Big Mike

On the inside, the original 2+2 configuration remains. Seating has received an updated bolstering effect, with the original vent hole look being carried through. Starting out with such a clean original car, dash and other areas remain largely untouched. Gauges have been updated to digital Speedhut units and customized with Gas Monkey Garage logos, lest you forget this build came out of their garage. A Datsun Competition steering wheel and shift knob finish off the proper vintage tuner look and feel.

Gas Monkey Garage Datsun 280Z with Big Mike: Interior

Once the engine bay was plumbed, metal was shaped, and Leaf Green Metallic paint laid down, the only thing remaining is waiting to see how the build will be received on both sides of the bridge. Charles is confident the finished product will go over well, “SEMA gives people the opportunity to see that we aren’t just limited to the hot rod, muscle car or truck world. Gas Monkey Garage is capable of building just about anything out there—it’s a matter of getting your hands on it, having a vision and getting it done.” Big Mike adds, “I want people to think bigger. When you think bigger, you can achieve better—when you think bigger, you can build better.”

If the Z’s ability to churn out donut smoke is any indication, we’re sure the Fast N’ Loud audience will be perfectly happy with the finished product.

Project Goldie: Fab Fours Game Changing 2017 Ford F-250

$

South Carolina-based Fab Foursis known for building high-quality bumpers and accessories for late-model trucks and Jeeps. The company has also made a name for itself by pushing the envelope when it comes to innovative new products. For the 2017 SEMA Show, Fab Fours is stepping outside the box once again with its 2017 Ford Super Duty project dubbed "Goldie." Taking cues from the low center-of-gravity build philosophy of the Jeep world, the F-250 is fit with a set of 40x15.50R24 Nitto Trail Grapplers with only a leveling kit!

This was made possible by Fab Fours new Open Fender System, which modifies the truck's existing wheelwells to allow for a large set of treads. Similar to the off-road build philosophy of low and stable, keeping your tow rig with little-to-no lift is also a recipe for success. Since the suspension geometry remains as the factory intended, you're not jeopardizing performance or ride quality. Keeping it low also means the truck is easier to work out of, which is incredibly important in the '¾- and 1-ton market.

Along with new fender system is Fab Fours Truck ViCowl and Truck Grumper. While both the ViCowl and Grumper have been in the Jeep market for a year, this is a first for the fullsize truck realm. At the end of the day, we love seeing companies generate new products and concepts. While your diesel hauler might not need a 40-inch-tall tire, the fact that you can slide on a set with something as simple as a leveling kit is pretty incredible. Put it all together, and you have the makings for unique and low-slung tow rig.

2017-ford-super-duty-fab-fours-no-lift-40-trail-grapplers

The Open Fender System is comprised primarily of 11-gauge steel, with a 12-gauge steel inner fender. Since cutting is required, the kit includes a 16-gauge cab closeout plate along with closed-cell foam, which can be sanded and painted. The front headlight support is replaced by a 3/16-inch steel bracket. The F-250 as shown is running 40x15.50R24 Nitto Trail Grappler with a 2-inch leveling kit.

Fab Fours is well known for its Jeep JK grille/bumper combo, which it calls the Grumper. Now, it has a full production Grumper for trucks. The lower bumper sections are built from 3/16-inch steel, while the grille portion of the Grumper is built from 11-guage steel. It's designed to fit up to a 12,000 pound winch and has inserts that can be customized. The Truck Grumper also works with the intergraded adaptive cruise control sensor.

Another industry exclusive part is the ViCowl. This was originally shown as a prototype part at the 2016 SEMA Show and eventually rolled into production for the 2007 to 2017 Jeep Wrangler JK. Sadly, the truck version was put on the back burner. But, there's good news! The ViCowl is finally offered for the 2017 Ford Super Duty, Ram 2500, and Chevy 2500, with more applications slated. The windshield guard is comprised of 11-gauge steel and can be had with an optional 20-inch LED lightbar or four LED light pods. All ViCowls will ship with a matte black two-stage powdercoat finish.

Of course, Fab Fours has equipped the truck with other production bits such as its Headache Rack, side steps, and rear bumper. We're digging the color-matched upgrades as it takes an assortment of bold upgrades and blends them into the truck for an extremely refined finished look.

Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame Induction Highlighted with Campbell Pride

Since 1978, the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame has been inducting notable individuals in the off-road community. Now an annual affair, the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony celebrated a number of well-deserving individuals last night at the South Point Hotel and Casino at their 2017 ceremony, including one of our very own Nitto drivers, Wayland Campbell.

Established in the late '70s, the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (ORMHOF) celebrates and honors influencers of all types in the off-road industry. From racers to race promoters, media representatives to outstanding advocates for the sport, ORMHOF recognizes them all. This year, it was Dave Ekins, Bob Gordon, Cliff Flannery and Bill Savage who were inducted into the Hall of Fame with plenty of fanfare.

Very well-deserved, these four gentlemen weren't the only ones honored at the event, however. In fact, several more people were recognized for their roles in the off-road world through the 2017 Impact Awards. Nominated in the “Rock Sports” category, Wayland Campbell, Bailey Cole, Jesse Haines, Jordan Pellegrino and Levi Shirley were all contenders—but after the votes were tallied, it was Campbell that walked away with the award. A man of few words, Campbell accepted the award graciously with many cheers from his immediate and Ultra4 families in the audience.

This marks an incredibly successful year for Campbell, who just accomplished winning the 2017 Ultra4 Nitto National Championship after his most-winning season in Ultra4 Racing yet. The Rock Sports Impact Award will be added to Campbell's long list of awards, including the previous “Rising Star” Award he won from the ORMHOF in 2015. As you may remember, that was also the year that Shannon Campbell was inducted.

Truly a force to be reckoned with and one heck of a driver, a huge congratulations goes out to Wayland Campbell on his ORMHOF Impact Award win! Be sure to check out the gallery below to see all of the sites from the ORMHOF Induction Ceremony banquet—as well as the other award winners from the evening!

Parking. It is absolutely one of the most infuriating things about driving—because, often it seems nobody knows how do it. In this video, we take a look at the different types of terrible parking—the ones that hog spaces, the ones that invent new definitions for the word "compact" and even the ones that invent their own rules. Then we want to hear from you. What annoys you the most? Is it one of these? Or are there worse offenders?

SEMA 2017: Off-Road & 4x4 Top 5 Picks

First things first...None of our top 5 picks featured bluetooth driveshafts. But we did find some cool new stuff in the South Hall at the SEMA Show this year. Some are easy on the eyes, others are a bit in-your-face, but we can all agree that that each of these builds took time and dedication to stand out from the rest. See if you agree with our top off-roading picks from SEMA 2017...

1. Tasteful Gen 2 Raptor

The second generation Ford Raptor seemed to be the "hot platform" for this year's SEMA show, with many companies showcasing their products on them. This particular one, from SCT Performance, showcases a clean aftermarket front bumper with Rigid Industries LED lighting, and a set of 37x13.50R17 Nitto Trail Grapplers for an aggressive stance. SCT Performance offers tuning solutions for Gen 2 Raptor owners, opening a world of opportunity to get more power from their turbocharged 3.5L Ecoboost engines. We like this truck for its subtlety, by SEMA standards at least—not overdone, not too stock...just right.

Gen 2 Raptor from SCT

2. Mega Big Mega Cab

Our next build features a Ram 3500 Mega Cab with a 6.7L Cummins powerplant, sitting pretty in the McGaughy's Suspension booth. Known for their big-boy lift and lowering kits for full-size trucks, McGaughy's outfitted this Ram with their 8" Premium lift kit, alongside added Fox Shocks coilovers and bypasses up front. This Cummins is rolling on a set of American Force Wheels, wrapped in 40-inch Nitto Trail Grapplers and is the perfect jacked-up junction of function and form.

McGaugey's Ram 3500

3. Fab Ford

Okay, so maybe the "grumper" isn't for everyone. But you gotta admit, when it comes to over-the-top looking trucks with almost Transformer-esque design, nobody does it better than Fab Fours. Among their lineup was this 2017 Ford Super Duty, sporting their grill+bumper (Grumper) setup, a sleek windshield surround and light mount with their newly released fender flares, allowing you to run a 40-inch tall Nitto Trail Grappler with no more than a simple leveling kit. Tires that big on a virtually stock truck is definitely something we've never seen before. Try making that look good with a Sawzall... it ain't happening.

Fab Fours F350 Super Duty

4. Raptor Camper

How do you encompass all the essential parts of the SEMA off-road build into one truck? You start with the hottest platform, a Gen 2 Ford Raptor, add some big brass colored wheels to it and slap a Tepui Tents roof-top tent on the bed to give it a sprinkle of Overlanding style. This Raptor at the Bodyguard Truck Accessories booth definitely caught our eye, from its wide stance on Nitto Ridge Grapplers to the matching monster hook on the rear bumper. It really does have something for everyone.

Bodyguard Raptor

5. The Duke

Easily one of the most impressive builds in the South Hall, Randall Robertson's K50 Chevrolet crew cab in Nitto Tire's booth was an absolute showstopper. Unlike any other truck of its time, The Duke features a custom chassis and several styling points from different trucks of the era. This monster K50 is powered by none-other than the legendary 6BT Cummins, paired to an NV4500 manual transmission. The Chevy really gets its grit from a set of 40-inch tall Nitto Trail Grapplers, commanding a powerful and slightly intimidating stance. You'd be lucky to get a clear photo of The Duke all weekend, as show attendees circled it for the entirety of the SEMA Show.

The World’s Fastest Power Strokes

$

0

Ford's powered by Power Stroke-they’re the slow, perpetual under dogs of the diesel performance world. At least, that’s what some of the opposition thinks (and often says). Unfortunately for the Blue Oval haters of the world, Ford fans are some of the most loyal, dedicated truck owners on the planet—and the two record-holding Power Strokes presented in this article help validate this point. Both trucks are campaigned and sponsored by diehard Ford fanatics that’ve been at it for years.

The first rig is driven by Rawlings Barnes of Rudy’s Diesel Performance and is currently the quickest 1/8th mile Power Stroke in the world. It recently clicked off a 4.98-second 660 at 140 mph during the Rudy’s Fall Truck Jam event held on October 6-7 in Julian, North Carolina. As you might’ve guessed, Barnes’ fiberglass, Pro-Mod Super Duty is also the first Power Stroke to ever dip into 4-second territory.

The second record-setting Power Stroke on our list is owned by another North Carolina native: Brian Jelich. His ’00 F-350 is propelled via 7.3L power and has been a staple in diesel drag racing for nearly a decade. His steel-bodied, first-generation Super Duty is the quickest and fastest 1/8th mile 4x4 Power Stroke in the world, having recently laid down a blazing 6.19-second pass at Diesel Truck Wars.

Scroll on for the full scoop on these 1/8th mile assassins.

Pro-Mod Super Duty

001-Rudys-Diesel-Performance-Pro-Mod-Super-Duty

The Rudy’s Diesel Performance-backed Pro-Mod truck driven by Rawlings Barnes regularly competes in the Outlaw Diesel Super Series (ODSS), which with this sanctioning body only running the 1/8th mile at its events explains why the truck hasn’t yet taken a stab at the Power Stroke quarter-mile record. The truck sports the original cab off of an ’08 F-250 but is otherwise constructed of fiberglass or carbon fiber. And for a Super Duty this baby is light—weighing in at 3,542 pounds with Barnes in the driver seat.

4.98 at 140 MPH

002-Rudys-Diesel-Performance-Time-Slip-Record

Although it took most of the racing season to get the truck dialed in, things are finally starting to pay off. At the Rudy’s Diesel Performance hometown event back on October 6-7, Barnes and crew would achieve a best-ever 4.98-second eighth-mile pass at more than 140 mph. According to the NHRA’s 1/8th mile-to-quarter-mile conversion factor, that ET and speed translates into a 7.83 at 175 mph. This is a pretty good start considering the engine has been tuned very conservatively to date. Barnes and the Rudy’s team have wisely left the power backed down until the truck began to make consistent, clean passes, which it’s starting to do.

Exotic 6.4L, Proven TH400 Trans

003-Rudys-Diesel-Ford-Pro-Mod-F250

Speaking of the engine, a 6.4L Power Stroke resides under the hood. It’s been built for battle courtesy of Carrillo rods and Mahle forged-aluminum pistons, with an extensively ported set of factory-based, cast-iron heads from Elite Diesel Engineering. The fuel system’s makeup consists of River City Diesel 150-percent over injectors, Rudy’s Diesel Dual K16 high-pressure fuel pumps and two 230-gph AirDog low-pressure supply systems. Engine tuning is handled via a MoTeC stand alone ECM and the potent Power Stroke is backed by a Rossler Transmissions Turbo 400 and a Neil Chance converter.

1,300 HP and Legal to Run 6.50

004-Rudys-Diesel-Ford-Triple-Turbo-Pro-Mod-Super-Duty

Originally, the truck was built to pull double duty: compete in both Pro Street and Pro-Mod. It packed a triple-turbo arrangement as well (as this photo from the 2016 PRI Show reveals). However, the build morphed into the chassis being constructed to solely meet Pro-Mod class specifications (SFI 25.3 and legal to go 6.50 in the quarter-mile) and the triple-turbo configuration was ditched in favor of a single S475 from Precision Turbo & Engine. According to Barnes, the single charger spools quicker, simplifies the entire setup and still positions the truck in the power range it needs to be in (1,300-plus hp). The chassis was built at nearby Elite Fab and Design, with all suspension work being performed by Menscer Motorsports. Look for Barnes and the Rudy’s Ford to dig even deeper into the 4’s next season or make it to the quarter-mile to take a few shots at mid 7’s.

No Stranger to Speed

005-Brian-Jelich-2000-F350-Power-Stroke

Having run mid 10’s in the quarter-mile all the way back in 2010, Brian Jelich is a well-known commodity in the Power Stroke realm. After campaigning several different engine setups (from stock rods to built-to-the-hilt), some of the best HEUI injection system parts in existence and countless PCM calibrations (he personally tunes his engine), Brian knows what works and what doesn’t when it comes to the 7.3L Power Stroke. If it makes power, chances are he’s tested it. Thanks to cam and head work, Jelich’s ’00 F-350 has been charging deeper and deeper into the 6’s in the 1/8th mile over the past several years. But most recently, it was the four-linking of the truck and a 600-pound weight reduction performed at Paul’s Custom Fabrication that got the truck to hook and book even quicker. The standard cab Super Duty now weighs in at 5,700 pounds and nabs 1.4-second 60-foots.

6.19 at 112.98 MPH

006-Ford-Power-Stroke-Eighth-Mile-Time-Slip

In the case of a 3-ton truck, losing 600 pounds is equal to picking up roughly 100hp—and Jelich made the most of it when he stole the show at the most recent Diesel Truck Wars event held in Hertford, North Carolina, on October 21. Jelich’s 6.19 at nearly 113 mph not only makes his four-wheel drive F-350 the quickest 1/8th mile Power Stroke in existence, but it means the truck is capable of running 9.70’s in the quarter-mile (at 140-plus mph). Not too bad for a HEUI-injected 7.3L—a true dinosaur in the now high-tech diesel world.

B.A. Hard Parts & Big Fuel

007-Ford-Power-Stroke-Turbodiesel-Diesel-Engine

A built 7.3L, equipped with heads ported by Crutchfield Machine and complemented by a Stage 2 cam from Gearhead Automotive Performance, allow the engine to both produce and endure the stresses of roughly 1,250hp at the crank. A set of 400/400 injectors and a Gen3 high-pressure oil pump from Swamp's Diesel Performance bring the HEUI injection system (a design that has never been widely embraced for yielding big horsepower) to life, while Jelich’s own PCM calibrations keep the big injectors tame enough to drive the truck on the street. Efficient power transfer to the front and rear axles comes by way of a Level 4 4R100 built by Twisted Diesel Performance. Also notice that the valve covers have been Plasti Dipped for a touch of unique dress up under the hood.

Big Single, Little Spray

008-Forced-Inductions-S476-Billet-Turbo

Although Jelich courted a compound arrangement once upon a time, he has always experienced his greatest successes with a big single turbo feeding the 7.3L. Currently, he relies on an S400-based charger from Forced Inductions. Called the S400SX-76R, it features a billet compressor wheel with a 76mm inducer and makes between 50-55 psi of boost on fuel. With Jelich’s fairly conservative two-stage nitrous system activated, boost jumps up to around 60 psi. To keep drive pressure (and boost) from getting out of hand while spraying, the charger is externally wastegated.

Dyno King

009-Brian-Jelich-Power-Stroke-Chassis-Dyno-1000-Horsepower

In addition to walking the walk at the drag strip, Jelich is known for rocking the rollers at chassis dyno events and we’ve seen his Super Duty lay down more than 1,000 hp on several occasions. Here, he’s in the midst of laying down a nitrous-assisted 1,080 hp. The pass before—a fuel only run—resulted in 808hp. In this video, you can see the truck clear 1,069 hp aboard the former yardstick-dyno of the diesel industry: Dave Dunbar’s old Dynojet 248C.

The action photo of the Rudy’s Diesel Performance drag truck was provided by Amy Gilbert of Stainless Diesel.

JDM Checklist: 5 Things to Look For When Buying a JDM Engine

$

When it comes to import, JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) engines, the list of variety goes on and on. With all the options out there, it can be a scary time if you’re new to the JDM world. To a get a better understanding, we stopped by Ichiban JDM in Pico Rivera, California for a hands-on lesson. Rather than going in blind when buying a JDM engine, use our checklist to help make this purchasing process easier for you.

Just remember these 5 things when engine shopping!

1. Know What You Want

As we mentioned, the list of JDM engines is endless. If you walk in blind, you’ll most likely walk out with the wrong product. It is essential to know what you want out of your engine—and if you’re not sure, talk to numerous people and do your research!

2. Buy An Engine As Complete As Possible

This may seem obvious, but what does it mean exactly? Here are a few things to check for:

  • Wire Harness
  • ECU
  • Transmission
  • And even better… A full front clip!

3. Check the oil cap

This is your first chance to actually take a look inside the engine. So pop off that oil cap and look for signs of trouble such as sludge or milkshake.

4. Look for physical damage

You can always hope for the best when walking into a shop, assuming they’ll only give you the best product. However, better safe than sorry!

5. Check compression and rotation

If you don’t have the capability to do this yourself, just ask your shop to do it for you. They should be more than willing to help out. It’s the only way to guage the true output of the engine you’ll be buying.

To see more of an inside look at Ichiban JDM and even more import tips, check out our video coverage here!

004-2007-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-warn-gladiator-conversion

Hey! That doesn't look like a JK! Chris Durham is known for his unique Jeep builds and his latest JK does a fine job of confusing the masses and exciting classic Jeep enthusiast. The front end is a conversion kit made by Durham that blends the timeless front end clip of the '62-'71 Jeep Gladiator truck with the modern JK. Representing Warn Industries, Durham was always there to lend a hand (or cable) when needed.

5. KMC Wheels

005-2014-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-KMC-wheels-black-badger

Frequent visitors of Driving Line may recognize KMC Wheels'Black Badger JK that we featured a short while back. Just as these wheel pros were doing in Moab for EJS, the company was again proving out the durability of their new XD229 Machete Crawl beadlock during JK Experience. Fit with a beefier set of axles, to better transmit the powerful 6.4L Hemi V8, the KMC crew were always up for putting down the skinny pedal when 'crawling just wasn't cutting it.

006-2013-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-smokin-daves-bbq

Love BBQ and 'wheeling? So does Smokin' Dave's BBQowner David Oehlman. The returning JKX sponsor is a die-hard 'wheeler that, despite having a few electronic gremlins during the week, cooked up a good time. We're hoping next year we'll be closer to one of his BBQ joints, because... well, BBQ.

7. Tactical Off-Road

007-2017-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-rubicon-tactical-off-road-texas

After dealing with the aftermath of a Hurricane that sent record flooding into Houston, Texas, Tactical Off-Road owners C.J and Tawnie Breaux decided to leave C.J.'s bigger 1-ton JK at the shop, and got his wife, Tawnie's, ready for a week of 'wheeling. Despite splitting their time between hurricane recovery efforts and running a bustling off-road shop, the couple made it to the start of JKX ready to wheel. Fit with the latest and greatest parts (including Nitto's all-new Ridge Grappler tires) the fresh build performed flawlessly all week.

008-2007-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-low-range-4x4

Low Range 4x4 is a familiar name for those looking for top-tier builds and off-road service in North Carolina. The shop's owner Kelly Carter has been a sponsor and EVO Crew member for many years. The expert wrench used his know-how to help keep the trip running smoothly for others and even got to stretch the legs on his own JK during the week.

9. Revolution Gear & Axle

009-2012-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-revolution-gear-axle

Two things will get you far in life—the right equipment and a good sense of humor. Revolution Gear & Axle's Michael Nadel and Rick Kolber had an excellent helping of both. One of the few manual-transmission Jeeps, the duo showcased great 'wheeling ability along with a fun-loving attitude. Thankfully, the premium axle and gear manufacturer didn't have to pull any parts off the shelf to keep themselves (or others) moving on the trip.

010-2014-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-rubicon-nitto-trail-grappler-jkx

Husband and wife teams made up a good majority of the JK Experience pairs this year. Making the trek from the beautiful 'wheeling state that is Utah, Kevin and Dawn Little came ready for adventure. 011-2017-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-trail-grapplers-jkx

We can't think of a cooler way to spend a little father and son time than on a week-long 'wheeling trip. Marshall Hirt and his son James have been off-roading for years. Their time spent off-road showed through, as they managed to make it through the week with no broken parts and plenty of new stories.

  • Driver: Marshall Hirt

Kevin Kwon has spent most of his life prosecuting bad guys in Louisiana, while his co-driver Jerry Pettit has dedicated his career to protecting the people of LA as a police officer. Having the good guys be part of the pack definitely has its perks, as Kwon was able to help secure our police escort into one of the busiest party cities in the country, New Orleans.

13. Wheel-to-Wheel

013-2007-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-evo-long-arm-jkx-big-river

Matt Collins came to wheel hard and did just that. The Indiana native, along with his co-pilot Brock Gibson, learned early-on the importance of beadlock wheels. This would be thanks to an obstacle known as the "can opener," which would pulverize the Jeep's steel wheel and dislodge his tire on the first 'wheeling day. Not deterred, (and with a 40-inch Nitto Trail Grappler spare hanging out back) the guys beat the wheel back in shape and kept pace the remainder of the trip.

14. Here Comes The Blum!

014-2013-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-rubicon-jkx-fca-big-river

Michiganders Scott and Mallory Blum are Jeep enthusiasts through and through. Using the Jeep regularly on 'wheeling adventures, the couple has built the JK little at a time to create one incredibly capable machine. The JK not only stands out in the pack for its factory Gecko Pearl Green paint, but for Scott's talents behind the wheel.

15. Miller Time

015-2016-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-jkx-big-river-erik-miller

For the first time in JKX history, there were not one, but two, 2x King of the Hammer champions. Leaving his solid-axle Pro Series chassis back at Miller Motorsports, Erik Miller and his brother Kenny Miller enjoyed the comforts of what used to be Erik's wife, Leah's, daily driver. Wrenching until the last minute to get the JKU ready, the Miller brothers were able to skillfully navigate the week of 'wheeling sans any trouble.

  • Driver: Erik Miller

16. Cali Cool

016-2014-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-rubicon-evo-jkx-big-river

It's pretty easy to read through the list of JK's attending this year's JK Experience trip and think you'll need a second mortgage on your house to build a Jeep capable of attending. Thankfully, that really isn't the case. Darren Beeson's Rubicon JK was a fine example of how adding on the right amount of select modifications can allow your Jeep to keep up with the pack. With the majority of the powertrain stock, Beeson's JK proved that good driving and the right parts can be a recipe for success.

  • Driver: Darren Beeson
  • Co-driver: Jake Dillard
  • Stomping grounds: California
  • Model: 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
  • Engine: 3.6L

17. Rocket Jeepers

017-2010-jeep-wrangler-rubicon-trail-grappler-jkx-big-river

We're not sure if it's Matt Carter's career with NASA or the fact that he had the only two-door JK on the trip, but every time we caught Carter in action he was lifting a wheel in the air! With wife Deidra in the passenger seat, the Huntsville, Alabama, couple never backed down from an obstacle. With so many Unlimited JK's on the trail, it was refreshing to see a nimble two-door going to work.

  • Driver: Matthew Carter
  • Co-driver: Deidra Carter
  • Stomping grounds: Alabama
  • Model: 2010 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon
  • Engine: 3.8L

18. The OG

018-2007-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-randy-byers-jkx-big-river

Saying that you've been on every JK Experience is a privilege only the creator, Mel Wade, and Randy Byers share. A 'wheeling enthusiast, and all-round fun guy, Byers' love of adventure, along with his well-built Jeeps, have allowed him to become a regular figure on JKX. This year, Byers brought along his wife and his battle-proven silver JK—appropriately plated 1BAJK. At this point, Byers has become something of a Texas treasure. If you ever get a chance to 'wheel with him, we highly recommend it.

  • Driver: Randy Byers
  • Co-driver: Terry Byers
  • Stomping grounds: Texas
  • Model: 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

19. You Know, Thanos?

019-2014-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-sahara-mud-grapplers-thanos

If you follow comic-book culture, then the supervillain Thanos is probably on your radar. If you don't, the hood stickers and specialty plate on George Garcia's JK may cause you to ponder if that's his nickname or some sort of urban-dictionary slang for a part of the body they would definitely blur out on cable television. Either way, Garcia gave everyone something to marvel over as the Texas wheeler had no trouble throttling down when he needed to. Aside from a bent rear axle flange and a little locker trouble, the Texan managed to have a mostly trouble-free adventure.

  • Driver: George Garcia
  • Co-driver: Chuck Converse
  • Stomping grounds: Texas
  • Model: 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara
  • Engine: 3.6L
  • Transmission: WA580

20. The Daily Exotic

020-2015-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-rubicon-evo-columbia-jkx-big-river

Adding some cultural flare and big smiles to the trip was Johan Cardenas and his wife Paola. Originally from Colombia, the South America natives (now living in New York) piloted their Stinger Yellow Unlimited with ease. As was the case with all of the husband and wife teams on the trip, the two used great communication to ensure they could navigate the trails with minimal damage.

  • Driver: Johan Cardenas
  • Co-driver: Paola Cardenas
  • Stomping grounds: New York
  • Model: 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
  • Engine: 3.6L

With such a wide variety of cars to choose from on show outside the SEMA Show 2017, it's impossible to choose favorites or "best" picks. We found that across the board the caliber of cars at SEMA this year raised the bar, and out front of the Las Vegas Convention Center was no exception. Browse through the large gallery above and keep scrolling for a few cars that left an impact.

Rowdy '67 Mustang Fastback

1967 Mustang Fastback - SEMA 2017 - Rutledge Wood

Designed and built this past year by Rutledge Wood alongside K.C. Mathieu and Mike Finnegan, it was on the virtual chopping block during SEMA on Ebay Motors with proceeds benefiting diabetes charity. With an all-American paint scheme, the Mustang's big tires and rally-inspired Hella lights aren't something you see all the time on a pony car—but doesn't it fit just right?

Rowdy 1967 Mustang Fastback at SEMA 2017 - Rutledge Wood and Ebay Motors

With it's 427 Ford Performance engine pushing out 535 hp and a Tremec TKO 600 transmission, we know this beast is going to roll out a lot of fun for some lucky owner. Selling price? A steal at $55,000.

"Shadowless" '69 Ford Torino

1969 Ford Torino - Axalta and B-Line Auto Company

It takes a lot for a grey car to grab your attention, but this '69 Ford Torino made its presence known in a big way within Axalta's booth. Built by B-Line Auto Company, every last detail has been thought of on this build. From endless metal body work and shaping to one-off machined aluminum parts—we particularly like the functional hood scoop and vents that lead up to injection stakes on a 427 Ford engine built by Robert Pond Motorsports.

Details on #thebaddesttorinoever are too numerous to mention, but you can follow along with it's journey from being built in Nebraska to appearing at the SEMA Show on it's own Instagram account, @shadowless_torino.

Coco Zurita's In-Progress Datsun 620

Datsun 620 - SEMA 2017 - Coco Zurita

We couldn't be more excited than to see our buddy, Coco Zurita, working on another car project. The extreme athlete has been known to switch in his two-wheels for four before, and this Datsun 620 pickup looks to have all the makings preparing for something awesome.

Boulders to the Bayou: The 2017 Nitto Tire JK Experience Big River

Now in its ninth year, the 2017 Nitto Tire JK Experience presented by Discount Tire has created yet another amazing journey with the JKX Big River. When Jeep rolled out the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK in 2007, who would have known what a drastic impact it would have on the off-road world. With the 'wheeling initially doubting the durability and off-road prowess of the larger and more luxurious Wrangler JK, the aftermarket industry was tasked with proving that the modern Wrangler platform was indeed far superior than its predecessor. One of the most lasting and impactful ventures to do so was with the birth of the JK Experience in 2009.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

At its core, the JK Experience has never been just about 'wheeling, but rather showcasing that the JK platform can excel in a variety of terrains. This JKX Big River trip would carry a group of 20 JKs over five states, six off-road venues, and cover nearly 1,500 miles of tarmac during its weeklong journey. Within those miles were plenty of road miles, something that can often be a white-knuckled thrill ride for other modified off-road vehicles running 37- and 40-inch tires.

We were fortunate enough to come along on this year's trip as things started off in historic Hannibal, Missouri. Join in our journey to find out how we ended up with a police escort, fed marshmallows to alligators and shaved a good bit of sheetmetal on the trail.

Checking In for JKX

If you're a student of literature, Hannibal, Missouri, may ring a bell. It's the boyhood home of Samuel L. Clemens, better known by his pen name, Mark Twain. It would be this small riverside town that Clemens drew inspiration for some his famous works—The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Set alongside the massive Mississippi River, Hannibal would serve as the kickoff to the Big River JKX.

With JKs driving in from all over the nation, much of the afternoon would be spent checking in the rigs and going over the requirements list to ensure the Jeeps had everything they needed to participate. This included basic items such as a fire extinguisher and first aid kits to a full-size spare tire and working winch.

Leading the crew for the week would be JK creator, and EVO Manufacturing CEO, Mel Wade. As the only person who knows the exact details for your weeklong trip, Wade holds daily drivers meetings to provide participants with the information they need for the day's events.

Day 1: Hannibal to Central Missouri Off-Road Park with a "Can Opener" in the Middle

There's one thing you'll learn about JKX quickly when you're on the trip—you never stay in one place (or state) for very long. A quick jaunt through the twisty backroads and corn fields gets the group to Gary Williams' farm in Illinois. There, we were amazed at the expansive acreage, which was home to trails tucked throughout the forest-covered hills that make up the perimeter. Our trail guides for the morning would be from the good folks at the Two Rivers Jeep Club based out of Pittsfield, Illinois.

You'll be extremely familiar with you air gauge and air compressor by the end of the week, as much of the 'wheeling had the group airing down into the single digits. Here, Tactical Off-Road owner C.J. Breaux drops the pressure on his wife's fresh build, affixed with 37x12.50R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Paired with a set of 17-inch Machete beadlocks, Breaux was able to safely keep the hybrid tire's air down all week without fear of losing the bead from the tire.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Tree-lined trails that wind the hills and river beds kept everyone on their toes. Given the tightness of the trail system, it would be common for even the longer Unlimited JK's to lift a wheel.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Some of the hillclimbs were definitely more extreme than others. Thankfully, the soil was mostly dry and hard packed, as we're sure a little moisture would have upped the difficulty factor significantly.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

The biggest obstacle would be the "Can Opener." It's a rock outcropping with a gap perfectly sized to swallow a tire or lay your rig on its roof.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Matt Collins got his 40-inch-tire caught in the undercut on the obstacle. The biggest issue with this small slip-off was due to the fact that Collins wasn't running a beadlock wheel. With so much pressure on the outer bead, the tire was pushed off the wheel, resulting in the steel wheel being severely bent.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Tire size seemed to play a role in how easily the Can Opener could be conquered. For many running tires less than 40-inches-tall, a winch was needed to make the climb out.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

After a fun morning of 'wheeling, our day was far from over. Airing back up and hitting the road, we set our sights on Fayette, Missouri.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

This would be home to our second 'wheeling destination—Central Missouri Off-Road Park. This spacious compound is one of Missouri's newest off-road parks and has a great mix of tight and technical trails.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

There's also a fun man-made obstacle course. These hills were deceptively steep and great to see if your low range gearing was enough to slow your descent.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

While the 'wheeling was excellent, we had an extra special treat lined up at the property that evening. Park owner, John Overstreet, isn't just an off-road enthusiast, but one of the owners of CMMG. CMMG is known for its quality AR rifles and components and we got a chance to test out some of their well-tuned firearms at the on-site range. To say the least, everyone had a great time burning through ammo! This concluded one extremely action packed day.

Day 2: Flat Nasty Off-Road Park & On To Springfield

Peeling out of our cozy hotel digs, we hit the road for our next destination in Jadwin, Missouri. This 850 acre stop would be at another one of central Missouri's 4x4 playgrounds—Flat Nasty Off-Road Park. Open to off-road toys of the two- and four-wheel variety, Flat Nasty has trails ranging from easy to extreme.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Here's a sight rarely seen off of the Ultra4 Racing circuit—Erik Miller charging the trail up front with Loren Healy hot on his tail. The two King of the Hammers champs take it a bit more conservative when piloting their JK's, but that's not to say they weren't up for an optional hard line and a little competitiveness.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

The rockcrawling at Flat Nasty is no joke. Wade got his famed Spicy Chicken Jeep pretty twisted in this section, but his EVO Mfg. long arm did a fine job of keeping all four wheels planted and the Jeep plenty stable.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

A few inches can make all the difference on an obstacle. Couple the large rocks with the steep 'climbs and it didn't take much to find yourself pulling cable or repositioning to make through the trail.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Traction is always a hot commodity off-road. Using 40x13.50R17 Nitto Trail Grapplers, the crew from Revolution Gear & Axle were able to carefully crawl through some of the larger rock sections. Since we had to put down some serious road miles to get to our next stop, we wrapped up our day with daylight left and headed towards Springfield, Missouri.

Day 3: Springfield to Branson via Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch

By day 3 of JK Experience, the typical new-kid nerves are gone and guys are getting more comfortable 'wheeling alongside people who were complete strangers just a few days prior. This would be good as our next park would need everyone to be on point behind the wheel. It's called the Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch and if you want to check out an incredible mix of exciting and hardcore trails—this is where you need to come.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

With over 940 acres of land, we could have spent a week here and not hit every trail. We started off on a few intermediate trails then quickly stepped up to some more challenging terrain.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

If you've ever wanted to tackle a waterfall, this is a great place to have your chance. You'll need a good set of tires, decent wheelbase and a disregard for your hardtop. We found plenty of great climbs almost tailor-made for the JK platform.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Speaking of tops, there were a few areas that the group found the off-camber trails just steep enough to pitch their lids into the surrounding trees. No one in our group did any significant roof damage, but there were plenty of new door-pinstripes and top-marks after the day was over.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Sometimes going down can be trickier than going up. This sizable drop-off had everyone balancing their braking and throttle control as they descended. It was also a great spot to test the durability of your tire carrier and rear bumper.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

From one extreme to the next! Rounding out our day of rockcrawling was this epic lake view scene from our Chateau on the Lake resort in the bustling tourist town of Branson, Missouri.

Day 4: Branson to Hot Springs ORV Park with Co-Driver Challenge

As is the case with much of JKX, heavy road miles are the norm. This time, we needed to make the journey from Branson, Missouri to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Our destination would be one of the oldest parks in this part of the country—Hot Springs ORV Park. This would serve as our official camping stop for JKX, which seemed like the perfect time for the annual co-driver challenge.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

JK Experience limits you to one co-driver, so it's always wise to pick someone who isn't afraid to get their hands dirty. Beyond regular trail spotting, one of the most critical roles a co-driver can play is winch assistant. To test out his or her skills, the co-drivers all battled to see who could get their vehicle winched up the hill (technically a sloped parking lot) the fastest. The prize for the winning team? One of the cozy cabins at the park.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Darren Beeson and his co-driver Jake Dillard took top honors in the winching contest and then proceeded to give up their cabin to two of the married couples on the trip. However...

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

The couples ultimately declined. In fact, the cabin would stay empty as everyone in the group was looking forward to an enjoyable evening in more primitive digs. You'd likely only find this scenario during an off-roader's trip!

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Once everyone had set-up their camp for the night, we loaded up and hit a few trails to wind down our day. With so many trails, rigs were split up into smaller groups so we could get in as much trail action as possible before nightfall.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Day 5: Hot Springs ORV to Skyjacker Land

Come daybreak, it was 'wheeling time yet again. Dividing up our groups, we were able to hit a mix of the black diamond trails the park has to offer. Playing host to some of the most extreme off-road racing this part of the country has to offer, Hot Springs has a trail to fit your rig.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Rockcrawling is the primary attraction at this park and it has plenty of it to go around. Some of the more technical climbs were especially challenging—with water sitting at the base.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

A balance of throttle control, momentum and line choice were all necessary to make it through the trail system without pulling cable.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

In order to make a critical dinner date, we peeled out of Hot Springs a little after noon. Our destination would be another waterfront locale (noticing a theme here?). This time the tremendous estate would belong to the founder of Skyjacker Suspension, Lonnie McCurry Sr.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

As one of the oldest and most well-known family owned suspension company's in the U.S., Skyjacker Suspension has been turning out lifts long before the Wrangler ever came to market. Lonnie Sr.'s son, Lonnie McCurry Jr. has been hands-on with his father making the company the mainstay that it is today.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

The West Monroe family was gracious enough to open up their home for a JKX for dinner. After eating on the road for so many days, eating a catered meal in a beautiful home was a great change.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Did we mention the home was waterfront? That's a view we certainly wouldn't mind seeing every day.

Day 6: Following Mississippi On To Louisiana

Sometimes it's okay to play tourist and that's just what we did first thing in the morning. We were in the area of the headquarters of that famous bearded Robertson family of Duck Dynasty fame. We stopped in, took the tour and, of course, bought some gear.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Putting more miles under our wheels, we kept our southern trajectory. Stopping only for fuel and a lunch stop next to the Mississippi, the river we've been keeping tabs on along the way.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Our 'wheeling destination for the day would be in St. Francisville, Louisiana. It's called 4x4 Life Off Road and it's a private off-road area filled with a mix of high bluffs and Tunica Hills.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

As soon as we dropped into the first trail, we were met by thick foliage and some extremely steep climbs. We visited the park on a drier day, but still found momentum and wheel speed was key to staying moving.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Yes, there was definitely mud—gracious application of the skinny pedal made all the difference. Columbia transplant Johan Cardenas didn't take any chances and made sure to let his 37x12.50R17 Nitto Trail Grapplers do what they were designed to!

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

For those running V8 engine swaps, such as PSC Motorsports' LS Wrangler Unlimited, blasting up the taller hills was less of a challenge. A cool feature of the park is that they offer guided tours, so your first time 'wheeling the property won't have any unwanted surprises (or drop offs).

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

After our 'wheeling adventures had wrapped, and the sun was setting, we head down to the bayou. There, we were treated to some local Jambalaya.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Food wouldn't be the only thing cooking that night, as Chris Durham fired up his welder to fix an aftermarket tie rod that had broken on the trail. A few makeshift braces were hit with some heat from a Premier Power Welder and the trail fix was quickly executed.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

Day 7: Into the Big Easy and Beyond

The final day of the trip always seems to sneak up on you. With so much happening each day, it's easy to lose track of time and miles. Heading towards our final stop in New Orleans, we took our lunch break at the historic Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

After the house was abandoned, then nearly destroyed by cattle, it was then given a new lease on life and occupied privately for many years. Now, the entire grounds is used as a time capsule of sorts to highlight the good, odd and ugly of American history.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

It wasn't long before being back on the road that we would have a not-so-chance encounter with a few motorcycle officers.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

The reason? Since Wade knew getting 20 Jeeps anywhere near the famed Bourbon Street together would be a traffic nightmare, a police escort had been setup. Just like the big time politicians, we had the boys in blue cutting traffic aside so we could get to our final destination as a group. Not a bad way to beat traffic, if we do say so ourselves!

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

While we'd park the JK's for the remainder of the trip, our off-roading experience was far from over. Just a short shuttle ride outside of the city center we found ourselves hitting the water once again with the Bayou Air Speed Boat Tour.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

We were treated to a little known fact (at least by our group), that Alligators love marshmallows. Okay, that's not entirely true. More so, they seem to be attracted to white and will gladly swim over to grab a puffy white snack when tossed one.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

We even got face-to-face with some much smaller 'gators. Note: no Ultra4 drivers or tiny alligators were harmed during the making of this photo.

2017-jk-experience-big-river-nitto-tire

A waterfront view is how we would start the week and how we would end it. Each year, these trips come and go lighting fast and if it wasn't for the photos and videos, it would all be a blur. Of course, back at the dock we settled down for a victory dinner followed by a night out in New Orleans. But, we're keeping these photos off-line!
