While the argument about Ford using the Mustang name on its all-electric Mach-E crossover will likely go on forever, at the very least, Ford has proven that performance would be a big part of the Mach E’s mission with the enthusiast-oriented GT model that will top the lineup.

But wait, there’s more.

Just as you’ll find on the traditional Mustang GT Coupe, Ford has just announced a more powerful, better handling version that will be dubbed the Mach-E GT Performance Edition.

While it uses the same basic components as the Mach-E GT, Ford has squeezed out additional torque—634 pound/feet to be exact, to go along with 480hp. Ford says the Performance Edition should 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, down from an already impressive 3.8 on the standard GT model.

Interestingly, that 3.5 second 0-60 time also puts the Mach-E GT Performance Edition just ahead of the blown V8-powered Shelby GT500 when it comes to raw acceleration.

Other upgrades are included on the Performance Editions as well, including big Brembo brakes up front, unique 20” wheels and performance-tuned MagneRide dampers. Lastly, it gets unique front seats and badging to set it apart from the regular Mach-E GT.

As is the case with all cars electric or gasoline-powered, adding performance will come with a decrease in efficiency, with the Performance Edition carrying an EPA-estimated range of 235 miles.

EV SUV Performance Rivals

Naturally, the primary rival for the Mach-E GT will be the Tesla Model Y, and the Performance Edition looks to match the Model Y Performance exactly when it comes to the 3.5 second 0-60 time.

That’s right, in the case of the Mach-E ,it looks like it’s no longer Mustang vs Camaro, it’s Mustang vs Tesla and now we are even more excited to see the inevitable showdowns between these two vehicles.

And, of course if, you want push things even further when it comes to the Mach-E, all one needs to do is look at Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s RTR Mach-E 1400, which is easily one the fastest and wildest builds ever to wear a Ford badge. The future is crazy isn’t it?

While the standard Mach-Es are due to be delivered in the near future, GT and GT Performance Edition buyers will have to wait a little longer with deliveries expected to begin in the late summer of 2021.
