Earlier this year, Ford made some waves when it announced that it would be phasing out all of its sedans and small cars in the US market, with the Mustang remaining as its only non-truck or SUV model. Well, if rumors are to be believed, Ford may in fact have another four-door car in the works, only this one would be a larger, more passenger-friendly version of the Mustang.
According to posts over on the Mustang 6G site, Ford announced at a recent dealer meeting that a four-door version of the Mustang was in the works, and while these sort of unconfirmed rumors should always be taken with a grain of salt, it's these same dealer meetings where legit-looking images of both the upcoming Mustang GT500 and the "mini Bronco" SUV have been leaked from.
The concept of a four-door Mustang shouldn't be earth-shattering. In fact, we've previously laid out why this car should exist, and with the subsequent announcement that Ford would stop selling traditional family sedans, the idea of a more upmarket sport sedan actually makes even more sense.
According to the info from the dealer meeting, this four-door Mustang would have a turbocharged V8 and be aimed at high end European four-door coupes, although we see no reason why there couldn't be more affordable versions made to compete with cars like the Dodge Charger and Kia Stinger. Ford already has a wealth of different engine options it could drop in.
Time will tell whether these rumors turn out to be a true, and if the car does get built, the biggest question will be whether it's actually branded as a Mustang or Ford uses a different nameplate—perhaps Falcon, a la the Aussie sedan pictured above. Regardless of the nameplate, count us as supporters of an expanded and more practical Mustang lineup.
