Year in Preview: 2017 Diesel Truck Buyer’s Guide

It’s an exciting age for diesel lovers. For the first time in 30 years, at least one compression ignition engine option exists in each pickup truck category. The Chevrolet Colorado occupies the compact segment, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel lays claim to the half-ton category, the Nissan Titan XD essentially created its own class of truck, and the usual suspects (Ford, GM and Ram) continue to battle it out in the ¾-ton and larger department. Without a doubt, the diesel truck scene is the liveliest we’ve seen it in decades.

While diesel options are still limited in the North American market, any growth is welcomed; and with one look at the latest offerings, it’s blatantly apparent that diesel is diversifying the pickup truck field.

For a closer look at the current crop of diesel-powered trucks gracing dealer lots, look no further than our comprehensive 2017 model year review. Whether you’re in need of 30-mpg, 3 tons’ worth of hauling ability or 30,000-pound towing capability, there’s something for everyone.

Ford Super Duty

001-2017-Ford-F250-Super-Duty

With a new body, new technology and cosmetic changes throughout, Ford’s Super Duty represents the biggest makeover in the heavy-duty segment for 2017. Perhaps the biggest news is that Ford trucks will now make use of an aluminum body.

In fact, the Super Duty line now shares the same, high-strength aluminum cab as the F-150 (although the Super Duty version is considerably longer), complete with the 170-degree swing-out rear doors and virtually identical interiors. Getting away from sheetmetal shaved roughly 350 pounds off of the truck’s curb weight, which Ford promptly reinvested in the form of beefing up the frame (95 percent of it is fully boxed now).

BEST-IN-CLASS TOWING/TORQUE

002-2017-Ford-F450-Super-Duty-Platinum

But Ford didn’t stop there. The 6.7L Power Stroke V8 sees a 65 lb-ft jump in torque output, upping the ante to a class-leading 925 lb-ft of twist. Its horsepower rating of 440 stays the same. Coupling some suspension tweaks in with the aforementioned powertrain and frame improvements, and Ford now lays claim to the highest gooseneck towing capacity in the industry: 32,800 pounds (GCWR checks in at 41,800 pounds when properly spec’d).

Conventional towing beats out Ram and GM as well at 21,000 pounds. And to complement the added towing capability, the ’17 Super Duty features Ford’s Trailer Reverse Guidance. This system automatically shifts viewing perspective (via the navigation screen) depending on which way the trailer is being turned, and a color-coded birds’-eye diagram of the truck helps warn the driver of jackknife conditions.

Chevrolet/GMC 2500/3500 HD’s

003-2017-GMC-Sierra-Denali-2500HD

Aside from the cosmetically new, yet fully functional cowl hood, it’s all about the powertrain on the ’17 Chevy and GMC HD trucks. Specifically, the sixth generation 6.6L Duramax V8 has been revealed, and it packs a potent punch. Along with a best-in-class horsepower rating of 445 hp, the new Duramax (engine code L5P) produces 910 lb-ft of grunt at a low 1,600 rpm.

A stronger cast-iron block and crankshaft, connecting rods with larger rod bearings, and redesigned (more robust) cast-aluminum pistons prepare the short block for the added cylinder pressure (i.e. torque) it will see. Higher-flowing aluminum cylinder heads and a Denso-sourced high-pressure common-rail fuel system play a key role in the L5P Duramax mill’s 48 hp bump and 145 lb-ft increase over ’16 model year trucks.

SEAMLESS DURAMAX ALLISON COMBO

004-L5P-Duramax-Diesel-Engine

With ample power on tap, a variable geometry turbocharger and six gear options, the Duramax/Allison combo is as polished as it’s ever been. To cope with the added torque dished out by the new engine, the Allison 1000 was treated to an upgraded torque converter. Conventional towing capacity (20,000 pounds) and gooseneck towing capacity (23,200 pounds) remain unchanged, but with a more potent Duramax power plant under the hood, GM is a chassis beef-up away from upping the ante in this area.

Ram 2500/3500 HD

005-2017-Ram-3500-Cummins

While 2017 marks more of the same for the Ram HD truck camp, a new off-road package is available for all Crew Cab and Mega Cab configuration 4x4 2500 models (diesel or gas). Selecting the off-road option means the truck of your choice will come equipped with a limited slip rear differential, hill-descent control, Bilstein shocks, tow hooks and the same heavy-duty skid plates used on the Power Wagon.

Beyond that, properly spec’d 3500 dual rear wheel Rams still lay claim to a best-in-class payload rating of 6,720 pounds. As for max tow ratings, Ram remains in the thick of things with its 31,210-pound capacity — a close second to the Ford Super Duty. And just like ’16 models, three power ratings are available, depending on which transmission you choose.

FULL REDESIGN IN 2019

006-2017-Ram-2500-Cummins

As was the case back in 2010, the 2011 model year trucks from Ford and GM brought fresher overall packages to market at the same time, and easily ousted the Ram in terms of power, acceleration and (let’s be honest) “newness.” But Ram fans can rest assured, however, that once these trucks receive their full redesign for the ’19 model year, they’ll likely reclaim (or at the very least, attempt to reclaim) the coveted best-in-class tow rating.

And who knows? The high output version of the venerable 6.7L Cummins might once again see a leap in torque output, which begs the question: will Ram be the first manufacturer to offer a diesel engine packing 1,000 lb-ft of torque?

Nissan Titan XD

007-2017-Nissan-Titan-XD-Single-Cab

Nissan has been (somewhat unsuccessfully) vying for increased sales in the ever-competitive half-ton market since debuting the Titan in 2004. With the release of the Titan XD for the 2016 model year, Nissan brought to market a truck that attempts to bridge the gap between the half-ton and ¾-ton truck segments. Unofficially designated a “5/8-ton,” the Titan XD is in a category all its own.

At the height of the XD’s appeal is a commercial-grade, 5.0L Cummins V8 option, kept in its power band courtesy of an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission. A 5-year, 100,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty certainly doesn’t hurt the Titan XD’s appeal, in our book.

SINGLE CAB OPTION

008-2017-Nissan-Titan-XD-Cummins-Diesel

While no major cosmetic or powertrain changes exist on ’17 models, truck purists can rejoice. For the first time in its history, Nissan is offering standard cab models on both the Titan and Titan XD. Called the “Single Cab” option, pricing is said to begin at $38,335 for a 4x2 version of S model Titan XD (vs. $41,340 for an S trim, 4x2 Crew Cab). As you can imagine, a single cab option reduces the curb weight of the Titan XD, thereby increasing its towing and payload capacities. 2017 model trucks in single cab, 4x2 trim are rated to tow 12,640 pounds (vs. 12,314 pounds in Crew Cab, 4x2 form) and haul 2,420 pounds (vs. 2,091 pounds) in the 8-foot bed.

Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

009-2017-Ram-1500-Eco-Diesel

When it comes to the first diesel to grace the half-ton segment in more than 20 years, the Ram EcoDiesel remains largely unchanged for the ’17 model year. Along with its gas-powered counterparts, the Ram 1500 is patiently awaiting a full makeover for 2018.

The biggest change to effect ’17 models entails the scrapping of the Outdoorsman trim level, with its key features being broken up and redistributed throughout several other trim levels. The 3.0L VM Motori-sourced V6 remains the same, still cranking out 240 hp, 420 lb-ft of torque, and being mated to Chrysler’s ZF 8HP70 eight-speed automatic.

FORCING FORD'S HAND?

010-2017-Ram-1500-Eco-Diesel

Perhaps what is most interesting about Ram’s EcoDiesel is the interest it’s said to have garnered from the folks at Ford. With a 15-percent take rate on the EcoDiesel engine, Ram has shown that a sizable group of consumers will choose the diesel option — even over the likes of the highly-marketable Hemi V8 and amidst record-low gas prices.

Rumors have already been confirmed that an ’18 Ford F-150 will most likely entail a diesel option, in the form of the Ford-built 3.0L V6 currently being used in the Range Rover.

Chevy Colorado Diesel

011-2017-Chevrolet-Colorado-Diesel

When it comes to the ’16 and ’17 model year Chevy Colorado Diesels, much of the story is the same — but it’s a good story. For the first time since the mid 1980s, a diesel-powered compact pickup is being produced, and we like that... a lot.

Just as with ’16 models, the 2.8L inline-four Duramax produces 181 hp and churns out 369 lb-ft of torque. Like its bigger brother, the 6.6L Duramax, it sports a Denso high-pressure common-rail fuel system. The same Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic remains the only transmission offering.

Fuel efficiency is what you’d expect from a compact truck packing a diesel engine. It’s good: 31-mpg-highway and mid-to-upper-20’s-around-town good.

SUBTLE CHANGES

012-2017-Chevrolet-Colorado-Duramax-Diesel

Subtle additions for ’17 include: a 7-inch diagonal color touch screen MyLink radio, optional heated front cloth seats on LT models and a low-gloss black stripe package (available on all trims levels except base models) that includes stripes on the hood and tailgate. While Red Rock Metallic and Inferno Orange Metallic paint colors have been axed, GM is introducing four new hues, including: Graphite Metallic, Cajun Red Tintcoat, Laser Blue (available mid-year), and Orange Burst Metallic (also available mid-year).

Jeep Wrangler JK Buyer’s Guide

If you’re thinking about purchasing a 2007 to 2017 Jeep Wrangler, you’ve come to the right place. Buying a new or used vehicle can be an extremely stressful experience for some. While NADA and Kelly Blue Book can offer you guidance on a stock vehicle’s given market value, much of that can go out of the window when dealing with the Jeep Wrangler. This is largely due to the tremendous amount of aftermarket wares typically adorned on a given Jeep.

Known by many simply as the JK, the 2007 to 2017 Wrangler has been one of the most successful Jeeps ever produced, both from a sales and performance standpoint. A large source of the JK’s triumph is due not only to its modern amenities that its predecessors lacked (hello, power windows and power door locks!), but also the convenience and practicality that the four-door Unlimited version brings to the table.

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

To help navigate you through your JK buying process, we’ve put together the hard facts that you should know before spending your cold hard cash.

Engines

3.8L (2007-2011)

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

Pre-2012, all JKs sold in the United States came with the 3.8L V6. Its power numbers are a bit underwhelming at 202 hp and 237 lb-ft of torque, but it’s livable when paired with the proper gear ratio to fit a given tire. Some of the most common issues include burning oil, intake manifold gasket failure and cracked exhaust manifolds. We’ve seen these engines destroy piston rings and spin main bearings with as little as 100,000 miles, but there are plenty of high-mileage ones still on the road today. Not every 3.8L is going to be a dud, but prepare yourself for the worst, just in case.

3.6L (2012-2017)

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

In 2012, Jeep did away with the mini-van sourced 3.8L and replaced it with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 that it still uses today. The dual-over-head-cam engine was a tremendous upgrade in power with 83 more ponies on tap. The all-aluminum block is lighter than the previous engine and uses a more easily accessible canister-style oil filter that you can access at the top of the engine. The exhaust manifolds are now combined with the head, so you won’t have to worry about cracking as you did with the 3.8L.

While 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque is a major improvement, this engine isn’t perfect. Like the 3.8L, the 3.6L has been reported to consume oil. While there was an issue with some of the heads on the first run engines, most of those have been addressed or recalled.

Transmissions

42RLE (2007-2011 AUTOMATIC)

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

The 42RLE automatic transmission was only paired with the 3.8L on the pre-2012 JKs. Its 2.84 First gear doesn’t give the Jeep much punch out of the hole, but that’s partly due to the fact the 3.8L makes power much higher in the rpm curve. Heat is the big killer of any transmission, and the 42RLE is especially susceptible to this when paired with oversized tires and additional strain (i.e. towing or harsh off-road environments). To avoid problems with this transmission, be sure to gear the differentials with a higher numerical gears when adding on taller tires. Also, install an aftermarket transmission cooler.

WA580 (2012-2017 AUTOMATIC)

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

The big news in 2012 wasn’t just an all-new engine for the JK, but a new automatic transmission as well. The WA580 is a five-speed automatic that got a First gear jump to 3.59. When coupled with the 3.6L, this makes the JK feel far more powerful both on- and off-road. Just like the 42RLE, an aftermarket transmission cooler and proper differential gearing will be critical to keeping the transmission in good shape. The WA580 is also known to handle V8 power.

NSG370 (ALL YEARS)

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

If you like to row gears, the JK’s six-speed manual will keep you busy. The NSG370 is the only manual transmission JK option. The 4.46 First gear ratio offers great control for technical driving off-road. Torque limits of the NSG370 are north of 1,100 lb-ft, making it a stout option for the JK. Despite looking excellent on paper, the manual is known to grind, pop out of gear and make a little noise. Keeping it filled with the fresh fluid of the manufacturer’s recommendation will help to keep you shifting smooth for years to come.

Transfer Case

ALL YEARS

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

While you could purchase a two-wheel drive Unlimited JK in 2007, most Wranglers are four-wheel drive. Splitting the power to the drive axles is either a New Venture Gear 241 or 241OR. The OR version is only found on the Rubicon models and is equipped with a 4:1 low range ratio instead of the regular 241’s 2.72:1 low range. Both transfer cases are chain-driven and use an aluminum housing. These T-cases are incredibly strong and can handle V8 power.

Axles

ALL YEARS, NON-RUBICON

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

On every non-Rubicon JK, you’ll find a high-pinion Dana 30 front axle up front. This axle is plenty strong for running up-to a 35-inch-tall tire. The major drawback to the axle are the small axletubes and end Cs. In stock form, the axle is fine. However, the axle is known to bend slightly when paired with oversized tires and more aggressive off-road driving. Beyond obvious signs of extreme tire camber, check to make sure the tires are not excessively chopped or worn more on the inside. With the exception of a handful of early JKs, most had a Dana 44 rear axle.

ALL YEARS, RUBICON ONLY

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

The JK Rubicon is fit with axles specific to that model. It’s equipped with a high-pinion Next Generation Dana 44 front and NG Dana 44 rear. There are a few things that make the Rubicon axles unique, but the most important from a buying stand point are the Tru-Lok differential lockers. This is an electronically controled selectable locker that acts as an open differential when not engaged. Only usable when in four-wheel drive, low range, the Tru-Lok differential “locks” when the button is depressed inside of the cabin.

By locking the differential, you are making both wheels rotate at the same speed, which means you have a greater chance for finding traction. The NG Dana 44s also boast a larger axle-spline count (32 vs. 30) in addition to being much stronger up front when compared to the Dana 30. These axles can easily handle 35-inch-tall tires. Depending on your driving style and Jeep build, the axles can sometimes survive with 37s as well. The big downside for this axle is the same as the JK’s Dana 30; the axletubes are small, and Cs can bend.

BENT AXLE OPTIONS

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

If you find that the Jeep's front axle is bent, all is not lost. Companies such as Dynatrac and Currie both offer upgraded replacement front housing that bolt directly into your Jeep. If your axle is in good shape, and you’d like to prevent it from bending, you can purchase an axle truss kit from companies such as EVO Manufacturing that will help greatly reduce the likelihood of your stock front axle getting the bends.

Is Rubicon Right For Me?

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

When it comes to trim packages and minor changes, there have been plenty over the years. From relocating the subwoofer in the cargo area to flipping the EVAP bracket over to create a makeshift skidplate, the JK is constantly being tweaked. For the most part, however, the bones of each are all the same. When it comes to trims, we like the Rubicon for ease of building. That being said, just because it's a Rubicon doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a better Jeep.

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

First, let’s look at the actual valuable bits that make the Rubicon package so desirable: front and rear Next Gen Dana 44 axles with selectable lockers, a 4:1 low range transfer case, electronic sway bar disconnect and marginally helpful rocker guards. Those are all items you’ll only benefit from off-road.

If you honestly don’t see yourself hitting the trail anytime soon, a Rubicon isn’t worth the extra money. However, if you see yourself as a weekend ‘wheeler and want to start ahead of the curve, the Rubicon is the platform for you. Out of the box, there isn’t a more off-road capable SUV than a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

Two Doors or Four?

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

Most of you will probably have your mind made up about whether the two- or four-door Unlimited model fits your budget and lifestyle the best. Mechanically, the two are virtually identical. We will throw in our two-cents here and say that the 116-inch wheelbase of the four-door is absolutely wonderful both on- and off-road. The longer wheelbase adds stability, and the additional cargo capacity is great on the trail. We tend to favor the Unlimited, but we suggest driving both.

Modified JK

BUYING USED

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

Don't be scared to purchase a JK already modified. Even if it's not exactly to your taste, often times it's easier and cheaper to buy a Jeep that’s already setup similar to how you would want it built. While you may be more drawn to the hardcore Jeeps since the components you're looking for may already be present, bear in mind these Jeeps may have seen a much rougher life than your neighbor’s mall crawler.

Do your research. If the seller list specific bumper types and suspension bits, Google them and figure how much the stuff cost, and don't forget to calculate in labor. When possible, have a professional 4x4 shop give it a once-over before you pull the trigger.

BUYING NEW

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

Many Jeep dealers are aware that you want a modified JK but are worried about voiding the warranty, so they offer Jeeps already lifted that you can purchase directly through them and retain the warranty. This is an extremely attractive avenue for many, but proceed with caution.

The premiums often accompanying certain bumper and lift packages by the dealer can be absurd; we're talking double and triple of what the component would sell for in the normal aftermarket. This is another one of those times where it's "buyer, beware," and you need to do your research.

Interior

2007-2010

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

The early JK’s dash and overall interior is pretty simple and Spartan. We like the no-frills-feel layout, but many discover the look and feel of the early JK interior is a bit too rough.

2011-2017

Jeep-wrangler-jk-buyers-guide

If you’re looking for more frills and cabin comfort, you’ll want a 2011 to 2017 JK. They have better seats, a better dash layout and softer touch points throughout.

The Best Year

For every person who asks what year JK he or she should purchase, we reply with a question of our own: are you looking for a daily driver or a weekend trail toy?

If the answer is daily driver, we always say look for a 2013 or newer JK. This will give you a Jeep with more power and interior comfort, both important for surviving the day to day grind. If you’re just looking for a secondary vehicle to have a little fun with off-road, we say any year is fine.

2017 Pickup Truck Buyer’s Guide

$
0
0

Was Nissan on to something by declaring 2017 the "year of the truck"? The short answer is: yes, but the longer answer is: it’s ALWAYS the year of the truck! For the better part of two decades now, folks have been using pickups for much more than work. These days, they’re being purchased for their versatility, their do-anything nature, and their creature comforts. Each year, standard features seem to improve, additional trim levels are introduced, more and more high-tech gadgets are added, and the trucks become more powerful and efficient. Did you know there are 11 different trim levels for the Ram 1500 alone? Or how about four engine options available for the best-selling Ford F-150?

It’s no wonder pickup trucks are the best-selling vehicles in America — options and competition abound, and you can build them exactly the way you want. It looks like 2017 promises to be the most explosive year yet, with a fresh version of Ford’s Super Duty and Raptor gracing the market, a more powerful Duramax diesel available in GM’s heavy-duty stable, a long overdue refresh of the Nissan Titan, new off-road packages offered on both the Toyota Tacoma and Ram 2500, and even a newfangled version of Honda’s Ridgeline. From incremental add-ons to all-out redesigns, take a look at the biggest changes from each manufacturer for 2017.

FORD

F-150

ALL HAIL THE ECOBOOST

001-2017-Ford-F150

Kicking things off is the truck with the lion’s share of the full-size pickup market: the Ford F-150. The popular twin-turbo, direct-injection 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine sees a 10 hp bump (up to 375 hp) and 50 additional lb-ft of torque (now at 470 lb-ft) thanks to the utilization of two injectors per cylinder, roller rockers making their way into the valvetrain, and a lighter weight (i.e. quicker-spooling) turbine wheel in each turbocharger. Backing up the potent EcoBoost will be a 10-speed automatic transmission (the brainchild of both Ford and GM...) with an ultra-low 4.69:1 First gear ratio and three (count them, 3) overdrive gears for increased out-of-the-hole performance and optimum fuel efficiency.

Super Duty

BACK ON TOP

002-2017-Ford-F250-Super-Duty

Receiving its most extensive revision since debuting in 1999, the ’17 Super Duty line represents the freshest truck in the heavy-duty segment. The F-250 and larger rigs steal much of their looks from the F-150 (grille, headlights, door handles), along with a high-strength aluminum body. The new Super Duty even shares the same cab with the F-150, although its cabin is noticeably deeper.

The narrower cab and the aluminum body helped shed approximately 350 pounds off the ’17 trucks — weight that Ford reinvested in the form of a stronger frame (95-percent of it is fully boxed now). Other high marks for the ’17 include an uptick in torque for the 6.7L Power Stroke V8 (now packing a best-in-class 925 lb-ft figure) and best-in-class gooseneck and conventional towing capacities (32,800 pounds and 21,000 pounds, respectively).

Second-Generation Raptor

KING OF ALL

003-2017-Ford-F150-SVT-Raptor

As the undisputed OEM king of off-road pickups, the Ford Raptor has undergone its first complete transformation for ’17. Most notably, the 6.2L V8 has been replaced by the second-generation twin-turbo EcoBoost 3.5L V6, which is uprated from the version used in the standard F-150 and packs 450hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, along with Ford’s new 10-speed automatic transmission. Other improvements include increased front and rear suspension travel, 3.0 Fox Racing internal bypass shocks replacing the previous Raptor’s 2.5 units, an all-aluminum body reducing overall heft by several hundred pounds, and a fully-boxed steel frame accommodating trucks with 133-inch or 145-inch wheelbases (SuperCab or SuperCrew).

Colorado and Canyon

A SOLID SECOND IN SALES

004-2017-GMC-Canyon

The second-generation Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon combine for the number two sales spot behind the longtime front-runner, Toyota Tacoma, in the compact truck class. With 32.5 percent of the market, the General’s midsize pickups have definitely made their mark since being reintroduced in 2014.

For 2017, the Canyon line will debut a top-of-the-line Denali model, while a ZR2 off-road package will be available for the Colorado. Four-wheel drive versions of the ZR2 Colorado will feature electronic front and rear lockers, and Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve shock absorbers offering proprietary, fluid-controlled compression and rebound. A brand-new 3.6L V6 gas or 2.8L I-4 Duramax diesel engine can be selected with the ZR2 package, with the V6 being the only mill backed up by the segment’s first eight-speed automatic transmission.

SUBTLE CHANGES

005-2017-Chevrolet-Silverado-1500

Even though most of the noise in the GM camp stems from the changes made within the HD and compact ranks, 1500 models receive their fair share of changes as well. For ’17, the MyLink audio systems now include Android Auto and a rearview camera comes as standard equipment for Chevy’s LT trim level, while all models now utilize a cap-less fuel filler system. The Silverado’s High Country package now features GM’s Enhanced Driver Alert system, power adjustable brake and accelerator pedals, IntelliBeam headlights, and a heated steering wheel. Brand new features consist of GM’s Teen Driver mode and Low Speed Mitigation Braking.

L5P DURAMAX

006-2017-GMC-Sierra-2500HD-All-Terrain-X

An all-new 6.6L Duramax diesel mill is hot off the presses in GM’s heavy-duty category, and it’s packing 48 more ponies and a whopping 145 lb-ft more twist than the outgoing version. Coined the L5P Duramax, it features a stronger cast-iron block with a more robust rotating assembly, a Denso high-pressure common-rail fuel system and calls for the use of a cosmetically appealing yet fully functional hood scoop on the trucks it graces.

An All Terrain X package will be offered on 2500 model GMC Sierras, and is exclusive to trucks equipped with the Duramax. Trucks optioned with the All Terrain X package come with their bumpers, front bumper skid plate, side molding, door handles and grille surrounds wearing one of two colors: Black Onyx or Summit White. NOT STANDING STILL

007-2017-Ram-1500-Night-Edition

Even though Ram’s 1500 model redesign won’t debut until ’18, it doesn’t mean FCA is sitting idly by this year. If the truck market has taught us anything over the last decade, it’s that standing still means falling behind. First up, Ram will offer a “Night Edition” for ’17, which essentially entails a regular, quad, or crew cab configuration Sport model being equipped with a sportier yet low-profile cowl hood, black badging, a gloss-black grille, blacked out headlights (from the Rebel package), and 20-inch black wheels. Next up, a Lone Star Silver Edition, available in crew cab only (4x4 or 4x2), will feature 20-inch chrome wheels, a chrome mesh grille, chrome badging, side view mirrors, door handles, side steps and bumpers. Last but not least, Rebel trim levels get Uconnect with an 8.4-inch screen, remote start, rear park assist and a backup camera as standard equipment.

A PRO OPTION

009-2017-Toyota-Tacoma

Continuing its dominance, the Toyota Tacoma currently lays claim to 42.7 percent of the compact truck class pie with 158,586 units sold from January through October (2016). The most exciting change for ’17 model year Tacos is the TRD Pro off-road trim option. Going a step beyond the TRD off-road package, the TRD Pro version incorporates Fox Racing 2.5 internal bypass shocks (tuned by Toyota Racing Development) up front, with Fox shocks and a TRD-tuned leaf spring suspension in the rear that makes use of progressive-rate springs. Tundra

MORE OF THE SAME

010-2017-Toyota-Tundra-Limited

The Toyota Tundra is perhaps the most unchanged pickup in the industry for 2017. Sure, a few subtle changes were made to its ‘17 models, but it’s nothing like what Nissan has invested in its latest rendition of the Titan (more on that below). The most notable changes to the Tundra line are that trucks equipped with the 310 hp 4.6L V8 will now come standard with a hitch receiver, along with bucket seats now coming as standard equipment on Limited models. Garnering just 5 percent of the full size pickup market in 2016, we don’t see Toyota’s sales climbing in this department given the lack of updates or improvements for the 18th production year of the Tundra.

NISSAN

Titan

NEW AND IMPROVED

011-2017-Nissan-Titan-Single-Cab

Thirteen years without a major overhaul is a long, long time for any truck maker — but alas Nissan has released the all-new Titan. Following in the footsteps of the Titan XD released in ’16 (the not-quite-half-ton, not-quite-3/4-ton that can be ordered with a 5.0L Cummins V8), the standard Titan utilizes a frame reminiscent in size and strength to its bigger brother, although it doesn’t share these exact components with it. A stouter rear axle, more powerful 5.6L Endurance V8, 7-speed automatic transmission, and nearly 9,400 pounds of towing capacity will bring the latest generation Titan into contention with the Big Three. For the first time, a regular cab configuration (coined “Single Cab” by Nissan) will also be offered (on both Titan and Titan XD’s). In addition, Nissan’s Titan line will carry the best warranty in America: 5-year, 100,000-miles, bumper-to-bumper.

Frontier

STILL HOLDING STRONG

012-2017-Nissan-Frontier-King-Cab

Despite undergoing no real changes for ’17, the Nissan Frontier continues to hold its ground in the compact truck segment. With 20 percent of the market share, it sits comfortably in sales at Third Place and may even one day (after its coming redesign) nip at the heels of the Chevy Colorado’s figures. While Nissan may have missed the boat in ‘17 — a year it’s calling “the year of the truck” in conjunction with the release of its all-new Titan — the Frontier will have its day in the sun in ’18.

’17 Ridgeline

WHEN CROSSOVER MEETS PICKUP

013-2017-Honda-Ridgeline-Black-Edition

While Honda’s Ridgeline may never win over the hearts of truck purists, a small yet respectable slice of the compact pickup pie remains up for grabs for this unique, unibody-based creation (i.e. the bed isn’t separate from the cab). After going dormant for two years, the Ridgeline is back for 2017, and it’s all-new. Looks, chassis, trim levels, power, everything. Now based on the Pilot chassis, the unibody was actually lengthened by 3 inches in order to utilize a full size rear door and extend the cargo bed’s length to 64 inches. On front-wheel drive models, five trim levels can be had, while seven different trim levels exist for all-wheel drive versions. In the performance department, the 3.5L V6 Earth Dreams engine cranks out 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque — good enough to propel a 4,400-pound all-wheel drive model from 0-to-60 mph in less than 7 seconds.

Celebrating the Classics at the 2016 Hachiroku Matsuri

$

0

For those that are scratching their heads at the meaning of the title "Hachiroku Matsuri," we'll start with a brief introduction. The Toyota AE86 was an affordable rear-drive sports car released in 1983. Known as Corollas in the U.S., in Japan they were referred to by their chassis code 86, or Hachiroku — hachi for eight and roku for six in Japanese.

Remember the Classics

The U.S. offered hatchback and coupe versions, but both were only equipped with retractable headlights, whereas Japan had both retractable and fixed headlight options. The hatchback version with retractable headlights is the better known configuration and is called Sprinter Trueno — Sprinter for "hatchback" and Trueno for "retractable headlights." It was popularized in the animation and manga Initial D; in fact, just about every AE86 event will have a replica of the famous tofu delivery vehicle.

Initial D - Fujiwara Tofu Delivery

The other popular configuration was a coupe with fixed headlights called the Corolla Levin — Corolla for "coupe" and Levin for "fixed headlights." There are also versions that incorporated the hatchback with fixed headlights and like in the U.S., a coupe with retractable headlights.

The AE86 was discontinued in 1987 and was replaced with a front-wheel drive version both in the U.S. and Japan. Although the name Corolla continued in both countries, the cars began to diverge greatly with the U.S. version becoming the No. 1 selling model in the world.

New School Cool

Fast forward to 2007, and the internet was abuzz with images of the FT-HS and the news that it was rear-wheel drive. The dreams of a new lightweight, affordable, rear-wheel drive car were looking more like a real possibility. Fans had to wait until 2011 to see the FT-86 concept; although not as radical of a design as the initial FT-HS concept, the name meant it should be considered a direct descendent of the classic AE86.

In North America, the FT-86 is sold as both the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. This is a result of Toyota's stake in Subaru's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, and the partnership that was made between the two companies. Simply put, Toyota designed the car while Subaru provided the chassis, engine, gearbox and production. The new 86 was an instant hit.

Morisaki's Subaru 86 ZN6

Celebrating the 86

Located north of Tokyo, there is a legendary circuit within the time-attack community. The Tsukuba Circuit 2000 is a little over 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) long, consisting of 12 turns, with its longest straight being 437 meters (0.272 miles) long. The track record for an automobile is held by the M-Speed R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R, which clocked in a blistering 55.23 seconds.

Tsukuba Circuit

Tsukuba is also a featured circuit for D1GP, Japan's professional drifting series. There are also plenty of club events held at Tsukuba, making it a perfect location to host the Hachiroku Matsuri. Matsuri is the Japanese word for "festival," and with over 150 86s in attendance ranging from grip to drift to show, it was definitely that.

The event makes all of the cars and drivers very accessible to fans. Walking through the paddock gives a preview of what was in store, but it still was not enough to prepare me for the awesomeness that I would witness throughout the day. Watching N2 and the engineering going into those classed cars was great; the sound was even better.

Osamuno N2 AE86

The "one-make races" were a lot of fun as swarms of AE86s made their way around the circuit sounding like angry hornets. That was in stark contrast to the 86/BRZ Circuit Challenge, whose participants were running for the most part stock engines with only suspension modifications; the lack of volume was like the day was put on mute.

During those sessions, spectators were inspecting the cars in the paddock and the car show area. There were some really clean AE86s, but I was bit surprised at the lack of new 86s participating in the show. One standout was an all original Corolla GT-S from America. The owner stated it was brought over by his grandfather who had served in the military.

Original Toyota Corolla GT-S

There was one session that seemed to bring all the attendants to the stands. The AE86 is a legend within the drifting community, so when there is a free run drift session featuring club names such as Running Free and Rough World, you don't miss it. Watching them drift through turns one through six was spectacular. Three-wide drift, no problem!

Running Free AE86 Crew

Overall, it was a great day with great people; meeting legends in the 86 community was especially very welcoming. If you are a diehard AE86 fan or find yourself in Tokyo in December, make sure to dress warmly and head to Hachiroku Matsuri at the Tsukuba Circuit. You won't be disappointed — I promise.

There was plenty to see, so make sure to check out the gallery for more.

Competition-Killing Engines and Rare Parts From PRI 2016

We’ve covered the glamorous side of the 2016 Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Show in Parts 1 and 2 of our “Fastest of Fast” series — you know, the vehicles that wind up in the winner’s circle. Now, it’s time to spotlight the individual components that got them there. What about the engine under the hood of that First-Place performer or the parts that make up its winning combination?

To answer these questions, we’ll delve into the ins and outs of several exotic power plants, from gas to diesel, four cylinders to a gigantic V16, and also highlight some of the most intriguing hard parts we came across at the show. Keep your eyes peeled for our final PRI Show installment: the latest go-fast parts on the market.

4,500 hp V16

001-Steve-Morris-Engines-V16-Devel-Sixteen

Why not kick things off with the wildest engine we stumbled upon at the show? Known globally for putting together one-of-a-kind, way over-the-top engines, the folks at Steve Morris Engines built this prototype V16 for their “Devel Sixteen” supercar project. Called the SME-V16, this masterpiece of machining employs a one-piece billet-aluminum block, billet crankshaft, camshaft and two-piece billet cylinder heads. Displacement checks in at 748 ci and four 81 mm turbochargers (two per bank) cram enough boost into the engine to produce a colossal 4,515 hp and 3,519 lb-ft of torque.

Cummins-Killing Duramax

002-Wagler-Competition-Products-DX460-Duramax

Wagler Competition Products is the go-to company for high-end Duramax diesel engine builds — and this DX460 model is no exception. Built to power the Super Stock class GMC Sierra infamously named “Cummins Killer,” a solid-filled factory block is fitted with a Winberg crankshaft, billet-steel bedplate, billet main caps, Darton (serviceable) ductile-iron cylinder sleeves, billet-steel connecting rods, Ross forged pistons with Total Seal rings and Trend Performance wrist pins. The rest of the engine is topped off with a 1-inch thick deck plate, billet-steel cylinder heads equipped with competition valve springs, Trend Performance pushrods and billet rocker arm assemblies. ARP fasteners abound throughout.

003-Columbus-Diesel-Supply-Turbo-Duramax

Feeding the Wagler DX460 Duramax is a single Pro Stock turbocharger from Columbus Diesel Supply. The massive turbo features a 5.2-inch diameter compressor wheel inducer and builds 130 psi worth of boost under load. The fuel system is an exotic version of the original common-rail configuration, employing five Bosch CP3 common-rail injection pumps (not present at the show), custom injectors from S&S Diesel Motorsport and media-honed, billet fuel rails. A Bosch 15.1 standalone ECU is used to tune the engine and help the overall package produce north of 2,500 hp.

Winberg Crankshafts

004-Winberg-Duramax-Diesel-Crankshaft

Speaking of Winberg Crankshafts, the Denver-based company was on hand at the show with a multitude of cranks on display (a Duramax version is pictured here). The folks at Winberg recently added super-micro polishing to their list of available services, which increases a crankshaft’s oil shedding ability, decreases oil foaming and parasitic losses and is available on all crankshafts. Winberg’s crankshafts can be found in some of the most elite competition engines in the world.

EcoBoost Power Module

Looking for a modern age crate engine to power your project? Ford Performance Parts is now offering the 310 hp 2.3L EcoBoost engine found in ’15-’17 Mustangs, coupled with a Tremec six-speed manual transmission as a turnkey package — a combo it’s calling the complete turbocharged powertrain solution for any Ford.

005-Ford-Performance-Parts-EcoBoost-Crate-Engine

The crate powertrain comes with Ford Performance’s M-6017-23T control pack, a starter with mounting hardware and an alternator with all of its necessary mounting hardware. This would be a nice package for space-limited swap projects, street rods or even older Mustangs. Prior to departing the Ford Performance Parts booth, we couldn’t help but overhear that the package’s MSRP figure would land somewhere in the $13,000 range.

Pump Gas, 1,200 hp Marine Engine

006-Chief-Engines-1200-HP-Marine-V8

Even marine applications have their place at the PRI Show. This pump gas-compatible, 622ci monster was built by Chief Engines. Labeled as Chief’s Offshore 1200 EFI Marine Racing Engine, it churns out 1,200 hp at 7,000 rpm and produces 1,200 lb-ft of twist at 4,500 rpm. It’s controlled via Chief’s own EFI engine management system, and like all Chief’s application-specific engine packages, is spec’d for utmost endurance and reliability. The fact that it looked like a million bucks didn’t hurt, either.

Hybrid Cummins Rod/Piston Assemblies

007-Carrillo-Cummins-Hybrid-Connecting-Rod

Being the diesel heads that we are, we took note of Carrillo’s new Cummins Hybrid connecting rod and piston assemblies for 5.9L mills. The small end of the rod incorporates a wrist pin out of the Duramax rod (which sheds 2 pounds off each assembly), and the rods are 0.856 inches longer than factory units (while the pistons are 0.856 inches shorter) in order to eliminate the need to run a deck plate in a competition engine (deck plates typically add $5,000 or more to a competition Cummins build).

Billet-Aluminum Cummins Block

Since its release, Scheid Diesel’s lightweight, billet-aluminum Cummins block has proven capable of holding up to serious cylinder pressure. It’s lived in half a dozen sled pulling and drag racing applications where more than 2,500 hp, well over 3,000 lb-ft of torque and upward of 130 psi of boost was being thrown at it.

008-Scheid-Diesel-Billet-Aluminum-Cummins-Block

Here you can see a block intended to go into a street application, complete with water jackets and a Bosch CP3 common-rail injection pump attached. With water jackets machined, the aluminum block weighs an impressive 138 pounds less than the factory cast iron block. A non-water jacket version of this block is used in Scheid’s 6-second rail, which competes in the National Hot Rod Association’s Top Dragster class each summer.

Cummins Crate Engine

Cummins Inc. was on hand, showcasing both the 5.0L V8 currently available in Nissan’s Titan XD pickup and promoting its first ever crate engine (shown). Called the R2.8, the inline-four 2.8L packs a single turbo, high-pressure common-rail injection and weighs just over 500 pounds. While the ratings may change between now and its initial release date (first quarter of 2017), horsepower currently checks in at 160 hp at 3,200 rpm, with 267 lb-ft of torque available from 1,600 to 3,200 rpm.

009-Cummins-Crate-Diesel-Engine

As for simplifying the electronics side of things, Cummins will supply all necessary wiring, an ECM and accelerator with each engine. Although its popularity may boil down to the all-important price point, we could see this engine taking off in the diesel swap and off-road segments.

Lightest Rods in the Industry

010-GRP-Billet-Aluminum-Connecting-Rods

From bracket racers to Top Fuel and Pro Mod race teams, GRP Connecting Rods has a hand in many facets of the drag racing industry. The company’s billet-aluminum rods are made in-house, starting with CNC-machining, followed by being honed to size (holding an honest +/- 0.0002 tolerance) and then polished to remove stress risers and give each unit a durable, polished finish. GRP’s SB (small block) 2200 series rod is the lightest Pro Stock unit currently on the market.

Mirror Image Turbochargers

The Mirror Image turbochargers available from Nelson Racing Engines are pure works of art, but these chargers don’t just look the part; they perform just as you’d expect them to. When used in twin-turbo arrangements (what they were designed for) on a V engine, they provide for the same exact charge pipe and headers to be utilized on each side, making the entire setup symmetrical.

011-Nelson-Racing-Engines-Mirror-Image-Turbos

Nelson is so convinced you’ll be satisfied, they offer an industry-leading, 1-year, “No-Fault No-Hassle” warranty on each unit built. Each Mirror Image turbo comes with a forged billet compressor wheel (with inducer size options ranging from 61 mm all the way up to 89 mm), ceramic ball bearing center cartridge, water cooled center section and a turbine shaft speed sensor. They can be purchased through any Turbonetics dealer.

Mikko Kataja's 1979 Toyota Starlet Race Car

It was love at first rev. A distant “braaaaap” filled the atmosphere, and grew louder as the car raced its way through the wooded course of the Empire Hill Climb. My eardrums became more excited with every passing moment, and when the little boxy white-and-yellow Toyota Starlet rounded the corner at full-throttle, the roar was so extravagant that I could see all the colors of the sound waves. I stood in awe for several minutes after it passed, enjoying the after-effects of the eargasm. Every backfire forced my grin upward, and I only came-to when a final breeze through the woods washed away the remaining reverberations.

Owner, driver and builder Mikko Kataja knows his car better than the back of his hand. He bought the 1979 Starlet as a stripped-down, sad-looking project car. With more determination than money, Kataja rose to the challenge at the perfect time. A student of Motorsport Engineering in Finland, he had access to a professional workshop with tools galore, and he built the Starlet to Finnish Group F rally regulations.

“In 2002, after driving in my first rally in Iisalmi, Finland, I was hooked,” he said. Kataja drove in several rallies and sprints and continued to perfect the car and his skills. In 2004, the Starlet was crashed and rolled during the last corner of the season’s final rally. But it wasn’t all bad: there were no injuries, and this was a chance for Kataja to re-build the pocket-rocket into an even more competitive machine.

Repairs were made with his dad’s help: The 4K 1,430-cc engine was overhauled and given a new Tatech 4 ECU. It ran happily and with more power until the engine gave way to high mileage in 2005. Any major improvements had to wait until his studies and involvement in the Formula Student project were complete. The Starlet was tucked away until 2009, when Kataja graduated as an Automotive Electronics Engineer and opened his own shop, VHTRacing Engineering.

The current driveline is a 4AGE 16-valve engine controlled by a MS6.4 ECU. A Sadev six-speed sequential gearbox paired with a carbon fiber driveshaft sends power to the wheels. The Starlet accelerates from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and creates 250 hp at 10,200 rpm. No wonder I heard it screaming long before I could see it.

For optimum handling fit to accommodate Kataja’s mad driving skills, the Scarlet sits on an adjustable front and rear suspension with heavy-duty sway bars and a custom spring and shock assembly by KW in Germany. Good braking power makes for better times, so Kataja installed AP Racing front calipers on Wilwood vented discs, with Wilwood calipers on the rear.

Kataja makes sure he is prepared for any condition: multiple tire combinations of various compounds are found in his trailer to battle through any road and weather condition, whether gravel, tarmac or mud, or rain, snow and ice.

The interior holds a full roll cage, Sparco steering wheel and bucket seats, a flocked dash and a DDU7 digital dash logger.

The down-to-business exterior flaunts a fiberglass front lip, hood, boot lid, a TRD-style spoiler and fiberglass wings. The 1,780-pound Starlet blasts past the competition, even when up against larger, more powerful engines.

For 2017, Kataja is considering the Mt. Washington Hillclimb in New Hampshire, and most importantly, some wheel-to-wheel club racing. Just like any builder, after gaining more seat time, all bets are in that he will find more opportunities for improvement, and the cycle will continue.

Head on over to the photo gallery below for a more detailed glimpse of the build, and read our coverage of the Empire Hill Climb.

Fitting a Ford Raptor With the Right Wheels for Work and Play

One of the easiest ways to make your truck stand out from the pack is by equipping it with a set of aftermarket wheels. With so many options, it can be a little overwhelming when trying to determine which one is best for your ride. Obviously, looks play a huge factor for many. However, for trucks such as our 2012 Ford F-150 Raptor, backspacing is critical. This is largely due to the already tremendously wide stance the Raptor rolls out of the factory with.

To determine a wheel’s backspacing, you’ll measure from the wheel’s mounting surface to the outer lip on the backside of the wheel. The lower the backspacing number, the farther the wheel will set outside of the vehicle. Our 2012 Ford Raptor came from the factory with a little over six inches of backspacing. This allows the stock wheel and tire package to remained tucked neatly in the fenderwells.

OEs typically stick with a high backspacing number and low offset wheel as it lessens strain on your front end components. Offset is referring to the distance from the centerline of the wheel to the wheel mounting surface. Offset is considered positive if it’s towards the outside of the wheel and negative when towards the back side of the wheel. While it all may sound confusing, companies such as KMC Wheels have taken a lot of guess work out by building application-specific wheels. Using the company's vehicle selector option on its website, you can see what wheels work for your vehicle and get an idea on how they look installed.

ford-f-150-raptor-kmc-machete-wheels

Our Raptor is a perfect example of this targeted wheel approach. Putting a more common backspacing of 4.5 inches on our truck would push the tire and wheel package farther outside of the truck than most Raptor owners would need or want, so KMC built a wheel that could accommodate the Raptor’s specific needs.

ford-f-150-raptor-kmc-machete-wheels

The XD128 KMC Machete Wheels were built with the Raptor enthusiast in mind. This means the cast-aluminum wheel can survive the desert and offer the ideal backspacing to allow the wheel to sit almost perfectly under the fender flares. We opted to order ours in a Matte Grey finish, but Satin Black and Stain Black Machined versions are also available.

ford-f-150-raptor-kmc-machete-wheels

The 17-inch Raptor version of the KMC Machete has 5.71 inches of backspacing. This pushes the wheel out slightly to help free up room for a larger tire without adding a high amount of increased leverage that a lower-numbered backspacing would.

ford-f-150-raptor-kmc-machete-wheels

At 9 inches wide, the Machete is perfectly suited for handing a 12.50-inch wide tire. We can’t see us ever going beyond that width or over a 37-inch-tall tire, so this size is ideal for our application. While KMC does offer a beadlock version of the Machete, the tall bead guides on the standard version work great to ensure you don't lose a tire in the dirt.

ford-f-150-raptor-kmc-machete-wheels

Opting for a 17-inch wheel meant we could transfer over our 315/70R17Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tires. We’ve logged thousands of miles on the treads so far with no failures or issues to report. They even hook up well in the southeast dirt that we frequent.

ford-f-150-raptor-kmc-machete-wheels

We have more upgrades on the way for our Raptor, so be sure to check back in as we continue to tweak the incredible off-road worthy half-ton.

The Latest Products From PRI 2016

Out of all the things we liked about the 2016 Performance Racing Industry Trade Show, it’s getting an exclusive look at the latest go-fast parts that really got our blood pumping. From power-adders like turbochargers and nitrous to hard parts such as rods, cams and heads, there’s a cutting-edge component that will meet your needs.

During our PRI 2016 perusal, we met up with some of the biggest names in the drag racing, circle track and sled pulling segments to see what was new. While we won’t be able to spotlight every new product on hand at the show, you can rest assured that the following (hand-picked) parts will move the racing industry forward in 2017.

Turbo by Garrett

Garrett is as big as it gets in the turbocharger business. Its OEM products can last hundreds of thousands of miles, and its aftermarket turbos are known to produce race-winning results. From what we’ve seen on the motorsports side, Garrett’s GTX line regularly outperforms larger turbochargers from competing brands. And now, Garrett is releasing its second-generation of the GTX line.

001-Garrett-GTX-GenII-Turbochargers

What does this mean exactly? Well, for starters, all of Garrett’s Gen II GTX units will come with improved compressor wheel aerodynamics. Instead of an 11-blade compressor being the norm, you’ll find 8-, 9- or 10-blade wheels, depending on which model you’re looking at. The improved compressor wheels are said to allow the Gen II chargers to make as much as 10 percent more horsepower. Gen II Compressor housings will also incorporate a speed sensor port.

Crane Cams

As you can imagine, LS cams are big business these days, and Crane has an entire catalog dedicated to the platform. Now the company is offering tool steel camshafts, which can be made to match any engine configuration. That’s right, Crane’s tool steel cams can be built one-off for any journal size, linear spacing or firing order that the customer needs.

002-Crane-Cams-LS-Tool-Steel

Thanks to the through hardening, heat-treating process its tool steel cams undergo, all units are extremely stable and resistant to surface wear, deflection and twist. Tool steel cams can be built to your specifications and ordered one at a time, or in bulk quantities.

Manley Performance Products

Manley Performance has the capability of manufacturing various hard-parts such as connecting rods, pistons, valves, pushrods and crankshafts in-house, so naturally the company offers a wide array of parts for several segments, including traditional small block and big block V-8’s, Ford modular motors and products for the LS crowd.

003-Manley-Performance-LS-Single-Roller-Timing-Kit

The company’s single roller timing kits for LS engines (LS-1, LS-2, LS-3 with single bolt cam, and LS-3 with three bolt cam) feature a heavy-duty roller chain from Rolon, billet-steel cam sprocket (heat treated with thrust bearing) and crank sprocket (heat treated with 9 key way), an oil pump drive socket and install without any modifying or massaging of the timing cover.

Did you know Manley was able to keep up with OEM production demands when it was the sole supplier of connecting rods for the 2003-2004 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra engine? That demand was 2,500 rods per week.

Dart Machinery

Dart introduced its new, high-flow LS cylinder heads at this year’s show. Called its NMCA Pro Stock 10 Degree Head, they’re made from RMR hipped cast-aluminum, feature 368cc CNC oval ports, 10-degree x 4-degree canted valves with reverse intake and exhaust location, and allow you to run a 2.300-inch intake valve with a 1.600-inch exhaust valve.

004-Dart-LS-Pro-Stock-Cylinder-Heads

Wedge style combustion chambers are available in any measurement from 38 to 57cc. Dart’s high performance heads can also be had with a 6-bolt (per cylinder) design.

Ford Performance Parts

In order to showcase all of the FoMoCo-approved performance options available for ’15-’17 Mustang GTs and EcoBoost Coupes, Ford Performance Parts had one of its pony cars laying on its side with the undercarriage exposed for all to see.

005-Ford-Performance-Parts-2017-Mustang

Among some of the highlights were the track handling pack (track lowering springs, assembled front struts and rear shock, performance pack upper strut mounts, etc.), a performance pack 6-piston front brake kit with 15-inch vented brake rotors, manual transmission cooler air scoop and high performance clutch fluid line upgrade. A half shaft upgrade kit, complete with severe-duty, serviceable CV joints with CNC billet centers and an improved subframe-to-body bushing kit that incorporates anodized aluminum bushings instead of the factory rubber mounts.

Edelbrock

Edelbrock hit the ground running at the PRI Show by promoting its new casting process and improved intake manifold designs.

006-Edelbrock-Cylinder-Heads-Intake-Manifolds

Its manifolds now utilize a two-piece core (vs. the previous one-piece core) and feature thinner intake runners for optimized airflow right out of the box. This should lead to much less work for the shop performing the porting on your heads.

Sun Coast Converters

With the addition of a second high-pressure fuel pump, a higher-flowing turbocharger and custom PCM tuning, Ford Super Dutys powered by the 6.7L Power Stroke can send as much as 700 hp (and 1,400 lb-ft) to the wheels. But sending that kind of power through the factory TorqShift transmission won’t do its lifespan any favors.

007-Sun-Coast-Ford-6R140-TorqShift-Torque-Converter

Seeing a need for a better torque converter in Ford’s six-speed automatic prompted Sun Coast Converters to fill this hole in the marketplace. At the PRI Show the company unveiled its triple disc converter, which features furnace-brazed internals and a billet stator for ultimate strength.

Precision Turbo and Engine

At the forefront of high-end, big horsepower turbocharger technology is none other than Precision Turbo & Engine. The company designs, manufacturers and tests its own compressor wheels (called Competition Engineered Aerodynamics, or CEA) in-house.

008-Precision-Turbo-And-Engine-Gen3-Turbochargers

For the PRI Show, its GEN3 CEA turbos were on display, including the new NHRA Pro Mod 88 mm unit, along with 94 mm, 98 mm and 102 mm chargers (the 102 mm snail can support 2,300 hp!). For truck pullers competing in the new Limited Pro Stock class, the company’s smooth bore (non map groove) 3.0-inch inducer turbo was also present on the display case.

Derale Performance

No company understands how important it is for racers to keep their powertrain temps in check more than Derale Performance, so naturally the folks there had a multitude of products on hand at the show.

009-Derale-Performance-New-Products

Everything from tube and fin coolers, plate and fin coolers, stacked plate coolers, frame rail coolers, heat sinks, electric cooling fans and belt-driven fans could be perused through. Now carrying its own line of high capacity, stamped steel transmission pans, Derale will also be offering its own patented line of belt tensioners soon.

Crower Cams

In addition to showing off its reknowned connecting rod and camshaft lines, several valvetrain improvements stemmed from the Crower camp this year, including its new roller lifters for high performance Chrysler engines.

010-Crower-Cams-Rods-Lifters

Designed to hold up in extreme racing environments, the lifters make use of thicker needle bearings, an axle made from tool steel and a 0.920-inch diameter wheel. The new 1-1/16-inch lifters are also 100-percent rebuildable.

Nitrous Outlet

We’ve spent plenty of time covering turbochargers and superchargers in our PRI 2016 coverage, but now it’s time to give nitrous oxide a little love. With a quick stop at the Nitrous Outlet booth, we were shown its new Promax Nitrous Controller.

011-Nitrous-Outlet-Promax-Progressive-Controller

The controller allows you to control two separate stages and can be had with an LCD touch screen or be programmed via laptop. High marks include a built-in data logger, a multi-gear lockout function and the Promax can even sense when traction has been lost and regained, adjusting the ramp-up of NO2 accordingly. Finally, the controller can sense when a nitrous flow issue is present and alert you to that fact.

BD Diesel Performance

BD Diesel enjoys a sizeable share of the diesel performance market. Thanks to its broad product catalog, from street to competition and even compound arrangements, the company has been at the forefront of bolt-on turbocharger sales and support for nearly 30 years.

012-BD-Diesel-Performance-SX-E-Turbochargers

The latest news from the Canadian-based BD is that its entire line of BorgWarner-derived turbochargers will now be be based on SX-E models (vs. the previous generation SX models). With a 360-degree thrust bearing assembly, forged milled compressor wheel, and an aerodynamically improved compressor housing coming as standard equipment on all SX-E turbos, a noticeable improvement in both the performance and durability of these units is virtually guaranteed.

Engine-Swap Basics

$

Anything but basic, an engine swap can span from mildly difficult to extremely challenging. While dropping a small-block Chevy into a roadster doesn’t bring too many surprises, shoving a Cummins into a Miata will prove much more formidable.

How to Engine Swap Basics - Miata with Cummins EngineLook for more on this beast of a Cummins-powered Miata soon on DrivingLine.com - plus details from the Ecoboosted Pantera above too!

And while we’ve done our fair share of engine swaps, we called in a couple of experts to back us up on these. Jonathan Ward founded Icon 4x4 and has been swapping powerplants since he first tackled perfecting the Land Cruiser and has moved on to Broncos, FJs, and one-off vintage transformations he dubs “Derelicts.” Similarly, Dave Harriton founded AEV after finding aftermarket support for JKs lacking. AEV now works directly with Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge creating modified vehicles that maintain their best stock characteristics. Believe it when we say the level and expertise of both of these companies likely surpasses anything we’ll be lucky enough to build in the garage.

How to Engine Swap Basics - AEV Jeep with HemiA Hemi in a JK? Yes please!

You’ll serve yourself well by checking off the basics on our list before you embark on your own swap so your daydream doesn’t turn into a nightmare.

Research, research, research

“Think through the entire equation and goals before doing anything,” Jonathan Ward urges. You don’t want to be elbows deep in a project before realizing nobody makes an input shaft that mates your new engine to your chosen transmission. Every. Little. Thing. Counts. Cover your bases thoroughly before investing money and getting your hands greasy.

Find the right partners

“If you’re going to put a different motor in the car, you really need the support,” Dave Harriton advises. “We call them snowflakes, because every car’s different.” While kits can be great for some of the more common conversions, always be prepared for unexpected challenges to your unique car year, make or model. If it’s more of a one-off swap you’re aiming for, know where to turn to for specialty custom solutions from bellhousings to electronics.

How to Engine Swap Basics- Jeep JK with HEMIHarriton estimates AEV has done over 1,000 Hemi swaps into JKs. Each is fully serviceable at dealerships and not one has come back with major mechanical problems.

Anticipate the law of chain reaction

Not only will more horsepower give you, well, more horsepower, it may also add un-asked-for weight affecting things like suspension and braking. And don’t get us started on how swapping the engine will carry through every single system on the car. Sure you’re ready for this? Ward says, “People need to think not just about displacement gains, but also about efficiency and refinement. Sometimes more horsepower may only mean more weight and a bad chain of events.” He’d urge those considering a swap to choose a contemporary OBD II–era small-block versus a hefty traditional carbureted engine.

Weight matters

How heavy and where the weight lies within the vehicle impacts how the handling was originally designed. If you’re swapping out something very different in weight, dimension or distribution, you’ll need to change much more than just the mounting points. Another reason why Ward pushes to go more modern: “Not only are they lightweight, but they’re so much more bang for your buck, especially if you’re budget-minded.”

How to Engine Swap Basics - Big BlockThis Big Block is not Ward's engine of choice for swaps - although he and the Icon team carried it out spectacularly in this '46 Oldsmobile.

One of these things is not like the others

It won’t just be the engine you’ll be swapping, but every other car system to go along with it: hoses, transmission, pedals, sensors, radiator, computers and much more is also up for change. You’ve got to decide what will stay and what will go—and how they’ll work together.

Safety first

While Harriton laughs when he says he’s seen everything from “household wire nuts on wires to masking-tapped gauge clusters,” he gets serious about the fire and safety risk that some people’s less-than-stellar handiwork can cause.

How to Engine Swap BasicsWe wish we'd had these pros giving us advice while swapping a SBC into Kristin's '55 Studebaker. Now we just need to decide what our next swap will be...

Don’t make an expensive paperweight

If you want to build something groundbreaking, be ready to commit and don’t forget the work doesn’t end when your swap is over. Is your car still going to be serviceable? “If diagnostics can’t be run when you’re finished,” Dave says, “what you’re left with is just a big paperweight.”

Bonus Tips from Jonathan Ward: Don't underestimate...

Transmission: "The refinement and control of a computer-controlled tranny can't be stressed enough. The 4L65E has many aftermarket solutions for adaptions that are really well developed and readily available."

Cooling: "A factory fan and fan clutch will beat out aftermarket fans any day. People also commonly forget the impact of a fan shroud."

OEM Mounts: "I've seen so many conversions that use the crappiest hocky-puck plastic polymer mounts. I strongly encourage builders to utilize OEM application of motor mounts and build a frame-side deck to match them."

DEEP Lifestyles - Zip Up Hoodie

Some events you just want to fly under the radar and focus on getting your work done. Look out for this brand new zip up hoodie for those who like to still look good, but act low key about it.

DTD FLIGHT JACKET

DEEP Lifestyles - Bomber Jacket

My personal favorite, and something I'll definitely be asking Santa for next year, is this new DEEP bomber jacket. It's comfortable, it's stylish and it's got pockets on the sleeve that I will probably never use — and that's what I love about it. The chest logo with their motto "Dare to Dream the Impossible" is attached by velcro and will be the perfect thing for my fingers to fidget with during those anxious times at events I'm waiting around for something to happen.

A little unconventional for the average gearhead, but totally awesome. Just like how the Los Angeles automotive scene is a mixture of different cultures, DEEP Lifestyles takes elements from what makes this little town of ours cool.

Honda Brings 360° Holiday Joy to Children's Hospital

While many of us might feel the pressures and stresses of the busiest time of the year, there are those less fortunate who might have a more difficult time experiencing the joy of Christmas. In one of the most heartfelt articles I'm going to write, I'm not going to talk about the hottest car of the show or the most exciting drift battle of the round or review the latest and greatest car mod. Instead, I'm going to shift my attention to something a major automotive manufacturer is doing to help kids in need this holiday season.

Honda CHOC Candy Cane Lane

Through the power of technology (and possibly some hot cocoa), Honda created a 360° Virtual Reality experience for kids at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) in Orange, California, to enjoy. As one of our nation's leading hospitals, CHOC Children's always strives to nurture, advance and protect the health and well-being of its young patients, but this kind of care can come at a price, as some kids are not able to leave the hospital. As you can imagine, not being able to go home is especially hard during the holidays.

Honda CHOC Candy Cane Lane

Thanks to Honda's Candy Cane Lane, kids can virtually drive down a snow-covered block full of Christmas lights and maybe, just maybe, spot jolly old Saint Nick himself.

Honda CHOC Candy Cane Lane

So if you're stressing about wrapping all those presents, take a break. Grab a loved one, take the three minutes to watch this powerful video, then make sure you give Honda's post some love. For every Facebook LIKE the post receives, Honda will donate $1 to CHOC Children's and Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation from now until January 2, 2017.

Honda CHOC Candy Cane Lane

Share this with your loved ones; not only will the 360º Virtual Reality Candy Cane Lane make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, but it's also a great Christmas story to share for an even greater cause.

Talking Shift_10: Cars With Christmas Spirit

The holidays have the ability to bring out the best in people, especially car people. For our 10th episode of Talking Shift, we'd like to recognize the automotive heroes of the season — those with faith that can haul giant Christmas trees, those with the courage to drive their vintage air-cooled Porsche in the snow and those who take extra care to give their ride a "festive" touch.

1. Big Tree, Little Car

KRISTIN: I recently realized that a lot of people have never actually purchased (and lugged home) a real tree. They’re totally missing out on the fun of engineering the ride home with it. What’s the biggest haul in the smallest car you’ve tried to do (Christmas tree or otherwise)?

electric car towing a giant Christmas tree

ANNA: Where there’s a will, there’s a way. I once fit a whole coffee table in the back seat of my little sedan.

JUSTIN: The tree is already decorated. Are you sure that little guy didn’t steal it from the mall or something?

ALI: I recently hit a tree in the road that had fallen off of a car in front of me. Thankfully, I was in the Raptor so there wasn’t much damage. Some people lack the skills necessary to properly haul a tree!

2. Yaasss Jeep, Sleigh 👑🎅💰🔥

ALI: Santa’s sleigh looks like it won’t have any trouble getting around Louisiana this year. Skyjacker definitely knows how to get into the Christmas spirit!

Skyjacker(Photo: @skyjacker)

KRISTIN: That’s gonna need some taller tires to make it’s way over the hoards of people here in Los Angeles.

JUSTIN: By my calculations, this Jeep is running on eight reindeerpower.

ANNA: If Santa had a Hugh Hefner-alter ego, this is what he'd roll into town in.

3. Toy Tesla

JUSTIN: The most fuel efficient Tesla you can get. This holiday season it runs candy canes and cookies exclusively.

Steven Hasegawa(Photo: @stevenhasegawa)

KRISTIN: The challenge here is fitting inside it after said candy canes and cookies!

ALI: Sadly, there will still be a waiting list and conspiracy surrounding this car.

ANNA: It took me five whole minutes to figure out this was a kid’s toy car.

4. Santa Got Run Over by a Wrangler

ANNA: I hope everyone gets the reference... Props to this Jeep owner for taking advantage of the snow and the fact that a Wrangler is the perfect vehicle to run Santa over in.

Megan Schanz(Photo: @meganschanz / Caption: @instajeepthing)

KRISTIN: Ha! My grandma once got ran over by their fifth wheel when Gramps was parking it. We never sang that song the same again.

JUSTIN: Grandma has been avenged.

ALI: Still not the worst Jeep accessory I’ve ever seen!

5. Just Classic Keeping It Casual

KRISTIN: Many owners of classics have stowed theirs away for the winter. Mad props go out to those that drive theirs. I’ve spotted Matt Hummel and his Porsche 356 at both King of The Hammers and Speedweek, so it’s no surprise he takes it on the snow as well. I’m thinking my Studebaker may need to accompany me to Hammers this year...

hummul(Photo: @hummul)

ANNA: I like that. If you have a car, drive it. Of course, I don’t know what it’s like to own more than one car at a time, either... so, easy for me to say.

ALI: It’s always great to see classics on the road, no matter what the season.

JUSTIN: Just picked up the 30th anniversary Blu Ray edition of A Christmas Story. I think this is one of the deleted scenes.

6. Snow Shrek

ANNA: Am I the only one who actually laughed out loud when I first saw this? There aren’t many winter/holiday-themed cars on Instagram that aren’t just decked out in lights or gift-wrapped, so this one’s a gem.

@kevin_the_kiddd(Photo: @kevin_the_kiddd)

ALI: I’m so glad I don’t live in a place where that’s a possibility!

JUSTIN: When will these holiday specials stop...

KRISTIN: The holiday specials must go on... and we will love them.

7. #TheHammersAreComing

ALI: While many are focused on the upcoming holidays, Heavy Metal Concepts reminded me that King of the Hammers in just a few short weeks away.

Heavy Metal Concepts(Photo: @heavymetalconcepts)

JUSTIN: Something tells me these guys wouldn’t mind coal from Santa.

KRISTIN: Looks like that buggy is just relaxing after eating too many Christmas cookies.

ANNA: “Roll over! Good, buggy!”

8. #GiftWrapChallenge

JUSTIN: It wouldn’t be the end of 2016 without one final viral challenge. Thankfully this one didn’t catch on as well as the others. Does this count as re-gifting?

Randy Truong(Photo: @randytruongg)

ALI: 3M should add Christmas paper to its wrap line

ANNA: #squadgoals

KRISTIN: I guess you could say, that's a wrap!

Have you ever seen a shaved monkey? (You're welcome, if you're curious...) Well, get ready, because the next season of "Fast N' Loud" will be without one of their most iconic stars, Aaron Kaufman. Yep, you heard right: after 13 long years, the bearded wonder is officially leaving Gas Monkey Garage (GMG). Richard Rawlings, Aaron's GMG partner, released an official statement confirming the news. He expressed his appreciation for everything Aaron has put into GMG, but reiterated that the show will go on and that the team "will continue to crank out killer rides week after week."

Aaron might have left Gas Monkey Garage, but you can still find him here on Driving Line!

The 5.9L TJ: Everything’s Better With a V8

If you've ever owned a project vehicle, then you know the absolute sense of pride and accomplishment you feel once it's near completion. For Randy Crews, that blank canvas was a yellow 2001 Jeep Wrangler TJ. This would be Crews’ first Wrangler, and he wasted no time hitting the ground running. Like most, the Jeep started off with a mild lift and new tires.

However, it steadily progressed into the V8-powered trail machine you see here today. A software developer by trade, Crews would build his skillset as he turned most of the wrenches himself over the course of the build. While quick to point out that Low Range 4x4 was tremendously helpful in getting the Jeep to its current state, the fact that he was able to teach himself to weld and fabricate in such a short period of time was definitely impressive.

Having ‘wheeled in places like Moab, Utah, and across southeastern North and South Carolina, he was able to craft a build plan that would allow his Wrangler to perform on either coast. While the 5.9L may make you think of a Cummins diesel, this Dodge Durango-sourced V8 was a budget-friendly and powerful option to replace the stock inline-six engine.

We recently caught up with Crews as he enjoyed the weekend in Uwharrire National Forest located just outside of Troy, North Carolina. As is the case with most builds, this one is still a work in progress. But we were eager to share this very cool and functional Jeep.

001-2001-jeep-wrangler-tj-v8-mud-grapplers

Sourced from a Dodge Durango, the 5.9L V8 engine is secured in place by a set of Advance Adapters engine mounts. To ensure the electronics portion of the swap wouldn’t be a nightmare, Crews had the experts at Hot Wire Auto craft a custom plug-and-play harness for the Jeep. While an electric fan keeps the engine running cool, a set of 78506 Hedman Headers attach to a custom 3-inch exhaust.

002-jeep-wrangler-tj-59l-v8-engine-swap

Gone is the original Dana 30 front axle and in its place is a G2 Axle & Gear Dana 44. The swapped-in axle is housing a 4.88 gearset, Detroit Locker and chromoly axleshafts. The steering is a custom high-steer setup that uses steering knuckles from the ’99-’04 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ. This setup offers better steering control along with better brakes.

003-wrangler-tj-dana-44-axle-wj-steering-knuckles

To more effectively cope with the V8 power, the stock Dana 44 rear was served with 35-spline chromoly axleshafts and an ARB Air Locker. Splitting power to both axles is an Advance Adapters Atlas II transfer case. The gear-driven T-case has a 3.0:1 low range ratio, which offers plenty of gear reduction and wheel speed — both critical for ‘wheeling over the often muddy southeast trails.

004-jeep-wrangler-tj-dana-44-rear-g2

A Rubicon Express Long Arm upgrade works with Old Man EMU 2-inch Heavy series springs and shocks. Crews states that moving from the previous short arm suspension to the long arm setup has made a significant difference in the handling on the trail and highway.

005-jeep-tj-rubicon-express-long-arm-suspension

Getting power to the ground are 37x13.50R17 Nitto Mud Grapplers. The heavy-duty extreme terrain tires are paired with a set of 17-inch AEV beadlocks, so Crews can run the single-digit air pressure figures he likes to on the trail. With two years of use on the Mud Grapplers, Crews said he’s been happy with how the tires perform. Even on rocky trails with 5 psi in the tires, he’s never experienced any problems.

006-37x1350-r17-nitto-mud-grappler-aev-wheels

One of the reasons Crews is able to run such a large tire and relatively low amount of lift is due to the GenRight highline conversion. By moving the Jeep’s flares up by approximately 3 inches, it opens up the wheelwell to allow more room for the tire to travel.

007-2001-jeep-wrangler-tj-v8-mud-grapplers

A Poison Spyder Customs winch front bumper secures an ENGO 9,000 winch and gives the TJ’s tires an unobstructed path in front of the tires. To make nighttime trail rides a bit easier, Truck-Lite LED headlights were installed along with a LED rock lights from Vision-X.

008-jeep-tj-poison-spyder-front-bumper

Inside, the Jeep is still a work in progress as new suspension seats and harness are next on the upgrade list. Much of the build was done at his home garage. This includes the clean 1 ¾-inch DOM ‘cage inside.

009-2001-jeep-wrangler-tj-interior-cage

This TJ is proof that lower is better, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to have a V8 TJ. We’ve ‘wheeled with Crews for a while and have seen the progression of this Jeep firsthand. Doing his research and logging real seat time has allowed Crews to build a functional and durable Jeep that can be driven to the trailhead on Sunday and work on Monday.

If you missed our written walkthrough, the new Porsche Experience Center Los Angeles (PEC LA) is open to the public, and it looks pretty cool. Ellen DeGeneres recently made a visit to the center, dragging her always reluctant but hilarious Executive Producer Andy along. Basically, she had the time of her life (Andy was a different story), and it was really fun watching her experience. No one puts the "joy" in "joyride" like Ellen.

Here are a few GIF-able moments from the video:

1. PEC LA Views

Alright, alright... we like what we see. Let's proceed.

2. Ellen's Love for Porsche

Wow, full circle is right. That's actually really funny.

4. The Simulator Lair

Look at Ellen's face. It might as well be Disneyland.

5. Restaurant 917

So generous — oh... LOL. But we know she totally would.

6. Andy = #1 Porsche Fan

Ellen just wants to make sure he doesn't get cold!

7. Pick a Porsche, Any Porsche!

It's okay, Ellen, this is an important decision!

8. Panamera 4S Hybrid Executive

Classic Andy can't hang, and Ellen is enjoying every second of it. She posted the best clip of the video on her Instagram:

9. Acceleration Straight

Although a little unsure of herself at first, Ellen quickly finds that driving full throttle is just like home.

10. Cayenne "Off-Road"

I don't know, Andy, but it's nice to know the Cayenne could handle it, regardless!

11. The Kick Plate

Yep, that's our Ellen in the driver's seat, staying calm, cool and collected.

Andy, your discomfort never fails to bring us joy.

Watch Ellen's whole experience in the video at the top. It's guaranteed to at least put a smile on your face, if not want to visit PEC yourself!
