A few months back Paul Rohm's Silverado custom appeared on this very website and we thought it would be a good plan to follow up and see how well the Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tires he runs on it were holding up.
For you kids just now joining us in the magical world of off-road exploration, the Terra Grappler G2 is one of Nitto's premium all-terrain light truck tires. That made them ideal candidates for Paul, whose Silverado goes both ways: on the pavement and in the dirt. His truck rides around on a set of 35x12.5x17-inch G2s.
As he told us then, "I wanted something more for daily driving but when you air the G2's down, they work really well off-road, too. Nitto really killed it with the way they designed that one."
Appearance may not be everything but it does help. "I really like the way they look, they have a really nice appearance. They have a tough, off-road look even for being an all-terrain tire. I also like that you can pick between the two sidewalls—one with big chunky lugs, the other smoother." Like all of its Grappler siblings, the Terra Grappler G2 features two bold sidewall designs. One side sports a raised thunderbolt pattern akin to the OG Terra Grappler. The other side features a new aggressive blade design. It runs from the shoulder tread block down to the sidewall.
Aesthetics drew Paul in but their versatility kept his attention. "I went with them because I didn’t want to get a full mud tire like the Trail Grapplers. It’s too extreme for what I use the truck for. The type of driving I do with that Silverado is 90% street and 10% dirt. What I wanted was a quieter tire with no load rating higher than what I needed. Otherwise, the M/T would have added weight which would have affected my gas mileage. All-terrain tread works well for me. And when I do go off the road I just drop the psi and these tires work well there too."
In the time he's had the Terra Grapplers, Paul Rohm's put them to good use. Working as he does for Design Infini both at the office and at off-road events, it was imperative he have all-terrains that could do both jobs pretty well.
All of the above is well and good for initial impressions but how have the tires held up since then? "They're a phenomenal value for the price," he tells us. "They last a very long time and wear very evenly. And the appearance you get for the price is great, too. The cheaper you go, the worse your tire looks. That can really come into play."
Part of that longevity comes from the tires' full depth siping. Not only do the full depth sipes offer functional benefits, they aid in maintaining the appearance of the tread design as the tire's wear over time. Beyond that, the latest materials let Nitto maintain the versatile all-terrain compound while increasing the lifespan of the tread.
Nitto also backs the all-terrain tire with a limited treadwear warranty. It covers 50,000 miles for LT-metric and flotation sizes, and 65,000 miles for hard metric sizes.
