Lexus' LX sits on top of the Toyota/Lexus SUV pack as the slightly more luxurious cousin to the legendary Land Cruiser. Sharing much of the same off-road chops as the 200 Series Toyota, the full size SUV is as comfortable as it is capable. When it came time to replace the tires on this 2011 model, owner Erv Carter wanted a tire that could strike the same balance. Choosing the Nitto Terra Grappler G2, the tires have been designed to meet everyday demands, both on and off-road.

Perfect OEM Replacement

When deciding on this set of Nitto Terra Grappler G2s, Erv chose to go with OEM-spec 285/50/20 sized tires. They were replacing comfort-focused street tires, and since the vehicle served primarily as a family hauler, maintaining the on-road manners was a priority. The Lexus had 130k miles when the tires were mounted, and has since put over 88k miles on the Terra Grappler G2s, an incredible lifespan for a capable all-terrain tire. With a generally even 11/32s of tread left on the tires, they are nearing the end of their life, but certainly have a few miles left.

Off-Road Performance

Generally speaking, this Lexus spends its time on-road, but it is no stranger to occasional trail rides in the mountains of Georgia and North Carolina. The tire’s alternating shoulder lugs work with the LX’s incredible AWD system to provide grip in muddy or sandy terrain, a must for the southeast’s unpredictable weather.

The LX570 has followed a Nitto Ridge Grappler equipped 4x4 Tundra on several rides, and has never failed at keeping up with the more rugged set-up of the more off-road oriented truck. While that should be no surprise to those familiar with the legendary reputation of the 200 series Land Cruiser and LX570, the chance to see the capability in action, especially with a tire that functions so well on-road, is a treat.

On-Road Manners

Ultimately, the LX is still built for luxury. With a bank-vault like interior, isolation from the road is certainly the priority. The Terra Grappler G2 doesn’t interfere. Nitto utilized a computer-designed variable pitch tread pattern that works to reduce road noise for a quiet, comfortable ride around town or on the highway.

There is none of the annoying on-road hum of other all-terrain tires, and the ride is vibration free. Although-20 inch wheels have long become commonplace on trucks and SUVs, the Terra Grappler G2s provide a compliant, supple ride on what would traditionally be a lower profile tire for off-road performance.

Aesthetically, the tires have handled their 88,000 mile life quite well. The full depth sipes have done their job to maintain their appearance through the wear, while also helping in all-weather performance.

Long Lasting Life

The Terra Grappler G2 is the first all-terrain tire that Nitto sold with a treadwear warranty, and this set has far exceeded the advertised 55k mile life span. With regular rotation, as well all the Lexus’s full time AWD system, the wear has been completely even and consistent front to rear. While the majority of that has been highway miles, knowing that there wasn’t a sacrifice needed for endurance and confidence off-road is a huge advantage of the Terra Grappler G2.

The all-around performance of the Terra Grappler G2 is what makes it such a perfect OEM replacement tire for the Lexus LX570. Functionally, it is a Land Cruiser with a tuxedo, fully capable of legendary performance, but in a package that radiates understated style, luxury, and comfort. While a set of more aggressive all-terrains, or even mud tires, can really wake up the beast, the Terra Grappler G2 allows the LX to maintain its decorum, while still showing that it isn’t afraid to get a bit dirty.
