While pickup trucks were once seen as a work vehicles above all, modern pickups have evolved into highly capable vehicles that can do it all.
From carrying loads around town to hauling the family, venturing off-road or eating up thousands of highway miles—there’s a reason why the pickup has increasingly become the chosen vehicle for so many American drivers.
And that’s exactly what my Scott Garrett's 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Duramax is used for. While I often hear accusations about how most pickup drivers don’t need or use their truck’s capability, that is certainly not the case here.
He purchased the truck second hand a couple of years ago, and it gets used not just for daily commuting, but also for hauling material, weekend camping and a whole lot of towing—including a fifth-wheel trailer.
With the OE tires on their last legs, he wanted to upgrade his wheels and tires to something that upped the capability (and look), but without taking away from the multi-purpose capability that the truck provides.
The Nitto Terra Grappler G2 was an ideal choice, thanks to its proven all terrain chops and reputation as do-it-all light truck tire. And while this big, diesel pickup doesn’t see a lot of heavy off-road use it does see a wide variety of driving situations.
Along with the set of 275/70/18 Terra Grappler G2 tires, he also installed a set of black 18” Method Race wheels to help give the truck a more aggressive look without being too flashy.
Now, with about 35,000 miles on the tires it’s been easy for him to see why the Terra Grappler G2 has been held in such high regard. With its all terrain compound and impressive longevity, they’ve so far proven to be an excellent match for this truck.
As mentioned a moment ago, he uses the truck for towing often, hooking up everything from a fifth wheel travel trailer to boats and project cars—and the tires have stood up to all of this without flinching.
And while the truck isn’t used for rock crawling or heavy trail use, he likes having tires that can get in done when making deliveries to customers in rural areas or accessing unpaved camp areas on weekends.
What he especially likes about them is their comfort and quietness. While it’s off the pavement where they show their capability, the truck sees a lot of highway miles and he loves the quiet ride they bring compared to tires he’s run in the past.
That’s all thanks to the variable pitch tread blocks that the Terra Grappler G2 utilizes to get rid of the whine and roar you so often hear with large all terrain tires. For him it’s been a game changer, particularly when driving with his infant daughter in the backseat.
And from family outings to work jobs, picking up project cars and everything in between the tires have very much lived up their promise so far.
With plenty more miles to go, it will be interesting to see how the Terra Grappler G2s continue to hold up,but so far the results have been great.
From adventure-ready crossovers to heavy duty pickups like this one, there’s a reason why this tire is such a popular choice.
