Jeep and cutting edge technology don’t usually go together, but Jeep is taking a step in that direction with their 4xe line which debuted at CES 2020.

A while back, Jeep’s parent company FCA, vowed to electrify all Jeep models by 2022. Jeep chose CES to reveal the first stage in their electrification plan with plug-in hybrid versions of the Compass, Renegade and Wrangler called 4xe.

Aside from blue accents and 4xe badging, the PHEV models don’t look much different from their gas-powered equivalents.

Seeing that all 4xe models on display featured Trail Rated badging, it looks like Jeep intends to retain their legendary off-road capability.

It was not mentioned where the hybrid's batteries are located, but in most EV's they're located under the car. The Wrangler Rubicon 4xe looks to have about the same ground clearance and flat underbody as the gas version. If it's located underneath, we're sure the aftermarket will quickly develop a skid plate to protect it.

FCA representatives were not able to provide any specifics as far as powertrain and range, but the added benefit of hybrid power could make this trio of SUVs better to drive on, and off-road. These PHEV models also benefit from added fuel efficiency, so you can go further on those adventures without relying on a jerrycan.

With the top off, doors off, and windshield down, you’ll only hear the wind and environment around you in a Wrangler 4xe. Under all electric power, the Wrangler 4xe to be a great for wildlife viewing. EV safari anyone?

Additionally, Jeep plans to release fully electric models including an electric Wrangler in the near future and more details of the 4xe models throughout the year.
