Throughout its evolution, Jeep has worked to continually improve the Wrangler platform. While the latest JL platform is lightyears away from its early predecessor, we still find that it could use a little help in one department: storage. More specifically, lockable storage. As the only vehicle designed from the factory with removable doors and top, the Wrangler is uniquely challenged with it comes to hauling around gear.
Over the years, we, like many, have used Tuffy Security Products to lock up everything from our air compressors to cell phones in our open-top-Jeeps. Recently, our friend was looking for a better way to haul around some of his trail gear in his 2018 Wrangler Unlimited Sport and picked up a Tuffy Tailgate Lockbox to get the job done. Given we’re always up for checking out new products, we had him cruise over to the house to get a firsthand look at the new setup. While you can check out the install in the video above, we’re highlighting even more in the article breakdown below.
As we discuss in the video, the Tuffy Tailgate Lockbox is designed to bolt to your tailgate using the existing threaded holes located under the plastic cover. We found the 16-gage steel box to be extremely light and bolted up in just a few minutes. Given its two-lock design and unique structure, we think it would be pretty difficult for any would-be thief to peel open.
This JL’s owner didn’t care for how far the spacers that came with the lockbox pushed out the unit. So, he cut them down, which allowed for the box to sit nearly flush with the tailgate. This freed up a little cargo room that was lost with the upgrade.
The ability to safely and securely store an air compressor, recovery gear and assorted off-road components makes the tailgate box a very practical upgrade. Another added bonus is that the gate when folded down makes for an excellent work area. While it will likely serve more as a sandwich making shelf for family outings, it can hold up to 40 pounds if you find you need to work something a bit more substantial.
Fit with a 2.5-inch suspension lift and 35x12.50R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers, this Sport JL balances practicality with trail prowess pretty well. Given the owner’s close proximity to the many drivable beaches in costal North Carolina, the Jeep sees plenty of time off-road.
