These days there are turbochargers everywhere. From base model economy cars to hypercars, there aren’t many segments of vehicles that don’t offer turbocharged engines.

Silverado Side

Next to join the list is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which will be getting an all-new 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the 2019 model year. Standard on the LT and RST models, the 2.7L turbo was designed to be a truck engine from the beginning, and it makes 310hp and 348 lb-ft of torque

Silverado Engine

While the idea of a four-cylinder engine in a full-size pickup might seem unusual, it’s a move that actually makes sense and should deliver improved performance when compared to the naturally aspirated V6s it’s designed to replace.

Silverado Rear

Along with a flatter torque curve and less weight compared to a V6, Chevy is also promising improved fuel economy thanks to features like cylinder deactivation and a stop/start system that shuts off the engine at stoplights.

Silverado Front

While we doubt the new 2.7L turbo will be converting many V8 and Diesel lovers, it should be a worthwhile addition to the Silverado lineup, and if it’s like other turbocharged four-cylinders of late, we’ll be interested to see how the aftermarket will embrace the all-new engine. It will be available when the 2019 Silverado goes on sale this fall.
